End of the Line?
When we visited the Salar de Uyuni in the rainy season, it had a layer of water on it that is gone by the dry season. Consequently, we expected that this was about as far as we could go in our truck since we were faced with such a great expanse of the water. The grooved surface here is the top of the Salar, a mixture of different kinds of salts. The water is not terribly deep, at least within a mile or so of this spot, no more than our calves. We found this out when we waded into the water after stopping here. In the top right corner you can see the SUVs of other adventurous travelers who drove out into the water. In the top left corner you see people who waded out into the water, inspiring us to do the same. After our wading was done, we would later drive out into the shallow water at sunset.
