1929-005

SG's first traffic light, installed in 1926 on base of the old fountain. Looking north, American Stores Grocery on the NW corner.

Concern for the Pine Street school children being able to safely cross Market Street, as well as fear by local businessmen of the Susquehanna Trail being relocated, because of the town's growing traffic problem, were key reasons for the light's installation. The fountain had long been a major hazard for motorists, but the light was placed on the base of the old fountain, doing very little to reduce the incidents of collisions.
