Venice - Gondolas and Gondoliers

Gondolas are inseparable from a mental picture of Venice: gondolas dancing over the ripples or moored to the tall posts called pali near the Paglia Bridge, where the gondoliers' Madonna stands; gondolas for serenades lit with lanterns, gliding on the small canals at night, police gondolas, refuse-collecting gondolas, fire service gondolas, goods delivery gondolas and even funeral gondolas with black pompoms.

As for the gondoliers, wearing sailors' jumpers and straw hats with colored ribbons, they murmur gondola, gondola as they propel their craft with a single oar, humming their songs.
