Venice - San Marco's Square

St Mark's Square is famous all over the world; it forms a great marble sollon. All around covered galleries shelter famous cafes and luxury shops. In front of the basilica are three flag-poles symbolizing the Venetian Kingdoms of Cyprus, Candia (Crete) and Morea.

The square opens on the Grand Canal through the delightful Piazzetta. The two granite columns surmounted by a statue adapted to look like the Winged Lion of St Mark and the statue of St Theodore, the first patron saint of Venice, were brought from Constantinople.

The square is also a favorite hangout for pigeons!!
