Edward Rice "Fort Frederica: Multiple Obsessions," 2013
In “Fort Federica: Multiple Obsessions,” painter Edward Rice continues his relentless and captivating investigation of Southern architecture by focusing on one single structure, Fort Federica on St. Simons Island. Inspired by Giorgio de Chirico, Lucas Cranach the Elder, medieval heraldry, and road signage, Rice produced more than fifty paintings, monotypes, and drawings during a fourteen-month period, all depicting a frontal view of Fort Federica. In this series, Rice explores various forms of painterly representation while employing a myriad of techniques and materials that are systematically documented. Besides artwork, the exhibition will include source materials and objects from Rice’ studio.
