NCWC AGM & Conference June 2017
The National Council of Women of Canada held its 2017 AGM & Conference meetings which were presided over by President Karen Dempsey. The AGM took place from June 22-25, 2017, in Ottawa at the Best Western Plus Gatineau-Ottawa Hotel. This was a momentous year as we celebrated Canada's 150th Birthday and honoured the Board of the International Council of Women to share in this special occasion. NCWC members from all over Canada arrived on Thursday, June 22. After an initial gathering, they were invited to attend an exhibition of the Quilt of Belonging held at Ottawa's City Hall. The quilt is a 120 foot long collaborative textile art project comprised of 263 blocks of quilted artwork, reflecting many cultural backgrounds in a textile mosaic, and portrays every nation that settled in Canada and the First Peoples. The launching of the exhibition occurred followed by a reception which permitted everyone to meet the artist who created The Quilt of Belonging project in 1998. Visitors had the opportunity to meet with artist Esther Bryan and sign her book about the history of its creation.
She worked with volunteers from Victoria to Newfoundland to the Arctic Circle who contributed their talents and ideas to this magnificent quilt. Subsequently, the ceremony to inaugurate the new president took place and Sandra Cohen Rose and her incoming Board of Directors were announced and presented to the members.
