Small but fierce
The American Kestrel is the smallest of North American falcons. It is about the size of a mourning dove. I have seen one chase off a Turkey Vulture. I have also seen them eating a mouse, a potato bug, and a red-winged blackbird. I am more freaked out by potato bugs than mice or blackbirds, so I admire their courage. This one has some blood on its lower beak from its last meal, as well as a few feathers stuck from preening.
