White Star Line Building (Albion House), Liverpool
In 1896 the White Star Line moved its HQ to this building at 30, James Street. The stylish new building was designed by celebrated architect Richard Norman Shaw who had just finished the Scotland Yard building in London and theses new offices were basically a better version of that building. Shaw also designed the Savoy Thatre and Albert Hall Mansions. Ismay's office is believed to have been in the lowest part of the turret on the right. The sinking of the Titanic was announced from the middle balconied window where I've put the note.
After the Cunard and White Star Lines merged in 1934 the building was abandoned.
The White Star Building was the first of the new breed of giant office blocks built in the city.
For the exterior, Shaw reworked his design for New Scotland Yard, facing the building in contrasting bands of brick and Portland stone, set on a granite base.
