Temple Steps

    Newer Older

Steps leading outside from the depths of the Temple of Horus at Edfu, Egypt.

The temple was built between 237 BC and 57 BC. It is claimed to be the best preserved ancient temple in Egypt and is the second largest after Karnak.

This is a hadheld, 1/4 sec shot. The roofs are in place on the temple so the interior is poorly lit and flash photography tends to "wipe out" the hieroglyphs and images carved on all the walls and columns.

A tricky shot with the lighting and all. You made it work though. Well done.

Thank you everybody for your lovely comments. It's the sort of photo that not everybody appreciates, but I was quite pleased with how it came out. Another triumph for the image stabiliser on the Panasonic FZ5!

Special thanks to Larry for selecting this as Pic of the Day. Two in a row! I am very flattered.

The lighting brings out the relief nicely. Good shot.

You know, if you were making artwork to go down a staircase in the present day, the most obvious thing would be to depict people walking down, wouldn't it? And that's just what this long-dead artist did, too. Why going down, though, rather than up? Or are there figures going upstairs on the opposite wall? Fascinating place....
