Old Oak Milk Bar , Kangaroo Point
Two shots from 2003 of the long - abandoned Oak at Kangaroo Point , near the Southern side of the old Hawkesbury River road bridge , on the old Pacific Highway .
The Newcastle - based Oak milk bars (the main one at Hexham) had a coveted reputation for delicious milk shakes and ice creams , among other things . No longer but the brand name still exists on flavoured milk in the supermarket .
Delightfully 60s in style it had some nice features , like the multi coloured stools lining the front counter , the sawtooth roof , loads of glass and cedar clad eaves . Its heyday would have been before the freeway ; business would have collapsed when the new bridge was opened in the early 70s . Closure and red tape followed , ultimately degenerating into this weed - infested ruin .
Oak had a habit of poor planning - a sister store at Peats Ridge suffered the same fate when the road was bypassed .
This one was pushed over a few years after this (presumably before it fell down) and a new Café now stands on the site .
