WWI officer's service record of John William Russell MC DCM MM. A gardener (and bellringer) near Dorking before the outbreak of war, he joined 24 Divisional Signal Company RE as a pioneer in 1914, by the time the Division went to France in August 1915 he was a serjeant. Following their first action, the Battle of Loos, in September 1915 he was Mentioned in Despatches. He was subsequently awarded the Military Medal and Distinguished Conduct Medal, commissioned and then awarded the Military Cross.
