Nautical Stars

By Judy Mathieson, 1986.

Inspired by a 13'x15' Compass Rose pen and ink by an unknown artist, circa 1800, in the collection of the Greenfield Village / Henry Ford Museum in Michigan.

The individual compass designs were based on ones I found on navigational charts, quilt patterns, maps and hex signs.

It was named as one of the 20th Century's 100 Best American Quilts in the exhibit in Houston at Quilt Festival 1999 and is on the cover of the catalog.

The quilt has received ribons in many shows including Houston Quilt Festival, Quilt National, Visions and Capital City Quilt Show. It appears on the cover of Quilter's Newsletter MAgazine February 1987 and has been pictured in many other publications including a software magazine, a college math textbook, calendars, a pharmaceutical advertising poster and the book Glorious American Quilts.
