Atlanta 1993: Kmart on Clairmont Road

    Newer Older

This Kmart was on Clairmont Road just north of I-85, now the site of Sam's Club. It was built in 1967 and 26 years later it still looked and felt just like 1967, which is probably why I loved going there and probably one of the reasons it closed. They were definitely behind the times.

This K-Mart was much farther back from the road than the current Sam's Club and today this spot in the parking is almost exactly where Sam's front door is.

That old K Mart sign is more recognizable to me than that new one they made from the 90's onward.

Yeah, this was a cool sign, especially at night. The newer logo is very generic.

Reminds me so much of the one on 2495 Pio Nono Avenue. It opened in 1963 and sold tons of merchandise (and lost tons from shoplifting). It was remodeled in 1992 before its relocation. Its replacement was built in a swamp across from a housing project in 1995 or so. By 2001 it was closed. In small towns you can luck up on some that closed prior to the remodelings and admire the architecture.

They sure don't make parking lot lights like they used to!

That was the first K-Mart I'd ever been to in my life and I remember my dad always refering to it as Kresgees. Can't tell I'm from the midwest..lol!

I once saw a Kmart that kept the old parking lot lighting over 25 years after the Kmart closed.

I remember one at Cleveland Rd. and I-75. As of 1992 it was still there. Anyone know if it still is today?

There was one at Gresham Rd and I-20 (now a WalMart). I spent most of my allowance there :)

Grew up near this place. There was an outlot restaurant, to the left in this photo, where we went to eat after swim meets. I remember hanging out in the parking lot afterwards. Couldn't have been more than 9!

Also got my first ever blank cassette tapes from here.
