03 May 2012, Kabul Afghanistan: Principal of Sorya High School in West Kabul, Naseema Saberi whose institution benefits from the Education Quality Improvement Program (EQIP). Saberi taught an underground school during the Taliban years and realises the importance of education for girls.. "In the provinces schools get burnt down and girls have acid thrown on them for attending school" she says. The only way to improve our society is through education". EQIP is a program designed to increase equitable access to quality basic education, especially for girls, through school grants teacher training and strengthened institutional capacity with support from communities and private providers. Program interventions are primarily targeted toward general education, teacher training and curriculum development. The program is being implemented by the Afghan Ministry of Education.
