The Torra Bay Consevancy is one of 31 in the Damaraland area and was established in 1993 with the help from Garth Owen-Smith of the Intergrated Rural Development Nature Conservation - IRDNC. One of the more attractive parts of the country it has also been successful in conserving and growing the numbers of game, poaching is virtually non-existent. The community benefits from live game sold, trophy hunting and shooting and selling of venison. Also some hunting for the community within the hunting season. Bergsig is the centre of the Torra Conservancy with a police station, school, clinic and the conservancy office. The Jakob Basson Combined School servers the community with grades 1 to 10. Of the 385 pupils approximately 365 are boarders. The facilities in the hostels are dilapidated and conditions cramped. The classes are also run down with no electricity. The dining hall has no furniture forcing the children to eat outside. Photo: © John Hogg/World Bank
