Betty teaches mothers with small children about nutrition

Betty Nabiteeko, 38, teaches mothers with small children about nutrition at her home near Mityebili, Uganda. The mother of five is a “community health promoter” monitoring the growth of babies and toddlers in Rakai District bordering Tanzania. Nabiteeko is encouraging women to feed the vitamin A-rich orange-fleshed sweet potato and other bio-fortified crops to their children to prevent childhood malnutrition and “stunting.” After the lesson, the mothers receive sweet potatoes from a large bag at Nabiteeko’s feet. “I want to see this generation vibrant and much healthier,” says Nabiteeko. The project has financial and technical support from the Japan Social Development Fund of the World Bank, and is being evaluated by the World Bank Africa Gender Innovation Lab.
