The Spiral Top is constructed on top of the old outer bulwarks on Bragernes Hill.

These were built during the period when relations between Norway and Sweden were tense, prior to the the dissolving of the the Swedish-dominated union in 1905, and were intended to protect the city from possible attacks from the south.

There is also one of the twelve guns which were deployed on Bragernesåsen when there was fear of invasion in 1905. The gun still stands there as a reminder of this period in Norwegian history.

It is fired once a year on the 17th May to celebrate Norway's national day.
