Onion Marmalade - Braised Pork Rillons, Black Pudding - super close-up - Auction Rooms Cafe AUD14.50, AUD3.50
braised pork belly rillons, house made baked beans, onion marmalade & toast
The braised pork belly rillons was better than the Braised Pork Belly we had last time! The tender cubes of pork belly had a nice caramelised crust. Some cubes were lean and wonderfully stringy, others oozing luscious seams of fat!
I was greedy, and got an extra serve of Andrew's Choice black pudding. Very good. Full of oats soaked in blood with sweetness coming from apple puree.
While the baked beans were not as mushy as I'd like, it still help balance the richness of the pork rillons. The onion marmalade seemed to get lost in the mix.
Apparently pork rillons are slow cooked pork belly preserved in its own fat, like a cross between confit and rillettes. Huge Fearnley-Whittingstall has a Rillons of pork belly recipe too!
Incidentally, John Lethlean, food writer had a go at making black pudding, as part of his research for The Age Good Food Guide, in which he mentions Andrew's Choice Smallgoods. Andrew's Choice hams were also given the tick by Richard Cornish.

Still love the dumpster-chic decor and buzzy atmostphere, and the food and coffee was better today!
The long queue (15 minute wait) was a bit annoying though, especially when I was hungry!
