Yam Surprise - Deep fried yam, rice noodles, lime salsa AUD8.80
We loved the Yam Surprise for the crisp chunks of yam/taro and sweet potato/kumera. It was served with chunks of cucumber and tomato, and a bed of rice vermicelli tossed in lemon juice and shredded Vietnamese mint. I suspect they were going for a vegetarian version of Vietnamese "bun". Not bad, but I can't imagine how you could find a vegetarian substitue for fish sauce! ok, maybe I can, a kelp-based broth might do it.

Global Vegetarian, 499 North Road, Ormond. As a narrow-minded meat eater, I will admit to some scepticism about a menu with dishes such as polenta with tangy bean and tomato stew, and cashew nut stir-fry. However, the place seems perennially busy, the food has real flavour and I'm eating humble deep-fried tofu bar.
