Stall - RP's Kurtos - Glebe Saturday Market, Glebe Primary School.
The girl at the Hungarian RP's Kurtos stall didn't want me to put photos of her stall on the internet. She had a bad experience where another tourist snap was misappropriate by the barbarians down south, in Melbourne no less! Apparently they used her logo on their stall without her permission and tried to pass off photos of her kurtos as their own!
I figure that I'd give her a bit more publicity anyway :)
(i couldn't bring myself to put a watermark on the photos though...)
As for the kurtos, we couldn't refuse her offer of a freshly baked kurtos rolled in crushed hazelnuts. It was great warm with a fluffy yeast dough and a thin caramel crust. She described it like a doughnut, except wound-up and roasted. Yum!
For a better description of what they are:
Kürtoskalács or Kürtos Kalács is a Hungarian pastry also known as chimney cake or stove cake or Hungarian wedding cake, is a pastry, cooked on a tapered spit over an open fire. Originally from Transylvania, it is famous as Hungary's oldest pastry. Kürtoskalács is sold in bakeries, pastry shops and even street vendors are selling them on street corners, carnivals and fairs.
... and a great Making Kurtoskalacs YouTube video.
