Agedashi Tofu - Ichiban Boshi, The Galleries Victoria - AUD5.50

Searching for a great ramen outside Japan is almost an exercise in futility. Sure, a few come close, like Kenzan GPO or Momotaro Ramen, or the best so far, the tonkotsu ramen at Ichiban Boshi in Cairns.

Even though Isabel warned us that we'd only get tonkotsu ramen at around 1-2pm, our hopes were dashed when we read on the menu that only 15 bowls of milky tonkotsu pork bone soup are made a day. Still, we asked the waitress if they had any left. She giggled and said, "sorry, sold out" :)

So, it wsa onto the "most popular" Tokyo Ramen. The ramen was chewy and smooth, with a great bite. The shoyu (soy sauce) soup base was also rather authentic, if a little salty. With the ramen set you got gyoza, which, by the way was very good, rice, pickles and salad. We also got an agedashi tofu, deep-fried tofu with a crisp batter that goes all silky after soaking the dashi sauce.

I think we'll be back :)
