Turmeric rice with beef rendang, fried chicken wings with a dark soy sauce and beansprouts - Minang Nasi Padang AUD6.50 + AUD0.50

Following a tip from Aunt Lee Geok, we visited this little Indonesian place for lunch. We wanted to try Warung Agus, but they were closed for the Christmas break until 12 Jan 2009.

From the logo in the shopfront, it definitely looked the part of a Minangkabau-style eatery, most well known for Nasi Padang, plain rice served with a variety of dishes.

At AUD6.50 for 3 dishes plus rice, it's a bargain. The food is quite good, not too much chillis and well-rounded spices. The selection was on the small side, 4 meat dishes, 4 vegetable dishes and sambal egg.

Julia got the beef rendang, fried chicken wings with a dark soy sauce and beansprouts. I got the crisp beef lungs, sambal eggplant and curried potatoes. The rendang was very tender, literally falls apart, and well-spiced. I love offal and the crisp beef lungs definitely did it for me. With just a hint of the metalic-tang typical of offal, most of the bits were crisp, but several slices were still nice and spongey. Drizzled with a sweet caramel dark soy sauce spiked with chilli, it is very yum!

They also have a decent teh tarik, a forthy tea, for AUD2.20. Just remember to ask for it "kurang manis" (less sugar) if, like us, you like it with only half a tonne of sugar. :)
