February 24, 2015 - "Leadership Dispatches: Chile's Extraordinary Comeback from Disaster" - In a recent Penn Program of Regulation Seminar, Michael Useem, Howard Kunreuther, and Erwann O. Michel-Kerjan, three Wharton scholars, presented their research in the form of their book, "Leadership Dispatches" detailing the devastation wrought by the Maule earthquake in Chile in 2010. At the time, a new administration had just taken office and was given the task of mending the remarkable damage to the Chilean infrastructure, economy, healthcare, and population. And yet, within a year Chile was back on its economic growth track. As the book discusses the mechanisms in which Chile rose from the destruction, it also provides useful insight into general disaster relief and how others can learn from Chile's example.
