The Plight of the Jaguar

This photo, taken through glass, represents the delimna of keeping animals in zoos. Such animals provide wonderful opportunities for education about nature, but they also suffer unnatural environments. This jaguar in nature would roam a territory of hundreds of square kilometers.

Recently a jaguar called "Macho B" was euthanized in Phoenix after having been captured in the mountains south of Tucson. He had remained free for his whole life, but was frequently captured on remote camera stations which documented his territory. He was approximately 15 years old when he died. He may have been the last remaining jaguar in Arizona.
