Ancient Bedrock Church of St. George, Lalibela, Ethiopia
These churches were carved out of solid bedrock between the years 1150 and 1300. How they were built is a mystery, though Ethiopians believe that angels helped build them. It is said that a king named Lalibela was poisoned by an uncle who wanted to usperp the throne. He was taken to Heaven for 3 days and there he agreed to build the greatest churches ever built if he were awakened from the dead. When he did arise from the grave, his uncle admitted to poisoning him and gave him the throne. There are more than 20 such churches in Lalibela, and over 150 in Ethiopia, all built within a 150 year period. The deepest (not tallest) was carved 60 feet into the bedrock. The ones outside Lalibela are mostly built into cliff faces.
