Shape Memory Alloys

Materials for construction industry: «shape conscious» alloys
Shape memory alloys (FeSMA) return to their original shape after severe deformation, either sponta-neously or as a result of the application of heat. This makes them useful materials for the construction industry – for example, for reinforcing bridges. Empa researchers, together with their industrial and scientific partners, show how iron-manganese-silicon alloys can be used to make the pre-stressing process simpler and more economic than with conventional techniques
