The aftermath of an 'accidental' landfill fire in Zgierz. Taken on June 2 2018.


Recently, Poland has experienced a boom as a landfill importer - multiple companies have sprung up that would offer to buy up trash from other EU and non-EU countries for 'safe and sustainable disposal' at knockdown prices. No such disposal was ever meant to be. The landfill sites, usually managed by shell companies, would spontaneously ignite, releasing highly toxic fumes into the atmosphere. I visited the site days after the blaze - there were still firefighters watching over the site to present it from reigniting. I was literally short of breath and close to puking after mere minutes there. For more context:
