Standard Rule Co. - Upson Nut Co. MERGED 1883-93
A Brief History Of Plane Manufacturing By
The Standard Rule Co. & The Upson Nut Co.
1883 - 1888 ..... The Standard Rule Co. made planes using their own patent and design. This first model had an adjustable cutter-carrier that was unique, but in my opinion this mechanism was not nearly as solid as the frog design that Stanley-Bailey was using at the time.
1888 .....The Standard Rule Co. Merged with the Upson Nut Co., Andrew Upson was the President of both firms.
1888 - 1893 .....The newly formed Upson Nut Co. Started manufacturing planes in almost the exact design and style as the “Bailey planes” that were being made by Stanley at the time with one exception, they used a lateral adjustment feature that incorporated a unique friction-slide-plate, this feature was invented by George Karrmann in his 1889-patent. Many of these planes today are found with broken friction-slide-plates. In the 2-size these planes are extremely rare.
1893 ..... The Upson Nut Company gave up on making planes and sold the plane making part of their business to the Stanley Rule & Level Co.
