Netherlands - Vlieland Island - Colors of Wadden Islands
Of all the Wadden islands, Vlieland is furthest from the mainland. Could that be the reason for the atmosphere of enormous calm that emanates from this island? After a journey of an hour and a half by boat - three quarters of an hour if you take the fast 'Koegelwieck' - you disembark at the only village, Oost Vlieland. In the long Dorpsstraat, shaded by tall trees, you will find everything you need on holiday.
A pleasant atmosphere, shops where you can buy your provisions, cosy terraces and, above all, holiday atmosphere! Everyone on Vlieland gets about by bicycle; visitors are not allowed to bring cars to the island. Moreover, cycling is an ideal way to see the island. You can make marvellous cycling trips, for example to the Posthuys on the western side of the island; this is where the mail was delivered in the old days, via Texel. Out through the dunes behind the beach facing the North Sea, and back along the Wadden sea coast.
The weather was exactly as you would expect - 5 min of sunshine, rain, snow, hail. The only stable element was very strong wind. However such weather conditions just add something very speacial to this great place.
