Law student Zach Pilchen is currently pursuing his Juris Doctor with a certificate in Environmental and Natural Resources Law at Lewis & Clark Law School in Portland, Oregon. With a strong interest in environmentalism, Zach Pilchen also serves as an associate editor of Environmental Law, the oldest environmental law review in the country.
Pilchen has excelled in his coursework, consistently making the dean’s list and maintaining a high grade-point average, while earning the top grades in classes like advanced legal writing and environmental law. Zach Pilchen actively pursues opportunities to exercise his legal skills, whether in moot court competitions or employment. He is currently preparing for the National Animal Law Competition, and competed as national finalist in the 2012 National Moot Court Competition, the largest moot court competition in the country.
Zach Pilchen has also contributed as a teaching assistant (TA) for Lewis & Clark’s Legal Writing Department. After serving as the TA for a first-year legal writing class last year, he currently serves as the TA for advanced legal writing, where he assists students with drafting a wide range of legal writing assignments, including judicial opinions, statutes, demand letters, and complaints.
As a law clerk, Zach Pilchen has done Clean Water Act for the Portland office of Perkins Coie LLP, and has worked for two summers as an honors law clerk at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). During his most recent summer with EPA, Zach Pilchen worked in the waste and chemical enforcement division, where he compiled evidence in ongoing litigation, prepared materials for settlement negotiations, wrote memoranda evaluating litigation risk, and more.
