UNION Gallery was founded in 2007 by Jari Lager, Director, inaugurating its activities programme with a major installation by Tom Dale, who transformed the gallery floor into huge tsunami wave made out of floorboards. UNION’s main offices are based above the gallery and are located in a former warehouse. Between 1998 and 2006 this building housed the VTO Gallery, also established by Jari Lager as an independent project space. VTO attracted significant international reputation and was included for four consecutive years in Basel’s Young Artfair LISTE.
Since it’s arrival UNION has been dedicated to discovering and supporting young UK and international talent. The gallery has always been committed to presenting ambitious projects by internationally established and emerging artists such as Christoph Schmidberger (USA), AVPD (DK) and Bernhard Martin (D), many of whom showing in the UK for the first time. Bringing together UK and international artists of different generations and working in a variety of media, formal languages and conceptual methods the gallery shares an attitude to experiment with a spectrum of visual forms, reflecting upon ideas from the fields of art history, media theory and overall culture.
