"It's true that I still feel tempted to use FILM....you can keep obsessed with Film Photography, but it's not necessary to excess your temptation. Go ahead and keep working on Film but do it discreetly. I don't believe Film is Better than Digital at all. If you say your Digital Photo is worse or vain, then that means you are basically not a good photographer at all.”

The crystal elements of my eyes are the Looking Glass to observe the world. My mind is the Dark Room which carries the Negative film inside. Then the Photographs are the representation of the Image which is reflected through the Prism of Soul.
Photographs won't tell any truth, but only gives us the bits and elements waking up from our mind's eye.
....but then, the question is what's the "truth"? :)

"Hands down the best photographer on Flickr."
August 18th, 2011
"I guess I don't need to mention or describe how good Tommy is as that has already been done by a lot of folks here.
I just want to say that his work isn't the only great thing but also the inspiration that it brings me and many other people here. His helpfulness and willingness to share his insight in photography are something that I'm very impressed with and thankful for as well.
In short, a very nice guy with the ability to open your eyes with his works.
His passion is undoubted.
Thank you for sharing your vision :)"

Keep up the great work!"

Watching photos from his gallery is a unique experience that takes you far, far away - in a voyage that permits escapism as well as being an inner journey within oneself.

"I've hesitated to write a testimonial for Tommy Oshima, just because it is difficult to put into words how much I appreciate his work. There is a melancholic string that connects much of what he does and that's something I can very much relate to. I love his ability to create images that engage the viewer almost immediately and at the same time make a lasting impression. I find his images often going through my mind long after viewing them on my computer.
I really feel that Oshima's work stands strongly with the other great photographer's of our time. This is all the more impressive when you consider all of the excellent photographer's that are out there. Oshima's work manages to complement that of others while also standing apart. I can usually tell that a picture is by him before actually seeing mention of his name. I hope he'll get a chance to exhibit his work in the United States, preferably on the east coast, so I can get a chance to see his prints in person. I greatly appreciate that his work is on flickr. It's a privilege to be able to view it anytime I want."

"Tommy Oshima is a master of photography, with depth and a wide witty universe, where Nietzsche can meet "par hasard" Godard, Lemmy Caution or Raymond Depardon. A very cosmopolite world indeed, where japanese, english, french, german, panasiatic, italian and other cultures are mixed. A very talented photo universe, where the better from argentic is used for great results, where deep contrasts, amazing bokehs, interesting textures and clever compositions are never uncommon.
Well, i knew this already, thanks to his wonderful photostream.
When i met him, i discovered also a very friendly guy. Bon vivant, Oshima-san...
Attentive to other people's thoughts, gestures and talks, Tommy Oshima is humble and open-minded.

He searches simplicity and beauty also in everyday scenes and objects. I also appreciate that he still works with film and old cameras, demonstrating that besides his sensibility he has also outstanding technical capabilities. Last but not least, in many images he well expresses the Japanese taste of his country."

December 28th, 2007
"When I look through Tommy's work I remember again what photography is all about. He tells stories with his images. They are not only about the things he photographs but about life itself, the beauty, death and all things that cannot easily be explained with words.
His photos are very moving and I am so grateful he is sharing them with everyone. They are a wonderful contemplative antidote for a world that is fast, superficial and generic."
December 18th, 2007
"Tommy has to be my most favourite photographer of all time. No words can really describe how awesome his photos are. He's a magician, playing tricks on your mind. His photos are like hypnotic poison drawing you into his fantasy world. After a while, you'll find yourself attracted to his photostream like a moth to a lamp in pitch darkness.. He's like a beacon of light, guiding us to a higher realisation of what photography can achieve. And when you thought you finally got enlightened by his works, once you venture out into the real world, you'll find it impossible capture it the way he did. That's the magic of Tommy...
I give Tommy my deepest respect. I hope his works will live on till the end of time, so that everyone may see his magic...his visions of a parallel universe that is intertwined with the world we live in, yet this alter reality we never managed to perceive, let alone appreciate..until we discover Tommy Oshima."

Respect."

Its probably because he also has the midus touch..."
July 12th, 2007
"I first discovered Tommys work on another site. I fell in love with all of it. And when I was fortunate enough to rediscover him again on Flickr it was like falling in love all over again.
It's not enough to say that his work is beautiful. What has me coming back for each image is that his work is inspiring. It makes you want to emulate him, to go out and shoot everyday, to try shooting film and to make art. I have to honestly say that he is my overall favourite photographer. And as if his great work wasnt enough he is also a great person. He is such a kind individual that you can't help but want to embrace him in his entirety.
If I was on the same landmass I would probably hunt him down and beg him to be my mentor. But the great thing is he teaches you so much just through his work. Thank you Tommy."

"Tommy?...damn he's good."
July 3rd, 2007
"I know that my testimonial will be only another one in this multitude of wonderful words, but I can't miss the chance for write what I think of mr. Oshima.
I discovered his art some days after my Flickr debut, and it was instant love. I've never seen that kind of photography, and I loved it at the first look. Every Tommy's shot is a discovery for me, and source of inspiration. I must admit that my vision of photography is heavily influenced by this man, you can see it in my photostream.
And the best thing is that even he's surely one of the huge Flickr superstar, he has always a kind and encouraging word for everyone, and he keep exploring the infinite world of photography, making his art "becoming" (in ancient latin it said "in fieri"). That's the reason why I will never get bored to follow his progress."

June 2nd, 2007
"TommyOshima is one of my favorite photographer on Flickr. At first,I just caught a glimpse of his work. After that,a lot of time spent in silent concentration. My heart fell to vague depths between those images.
I threw off my mind to experience his unusual odor which filled his shots from the real world. Through those exclusive odor,I can perceive his soul, and I'm deeply affected by the inward part of his works !
The artistic aura which TommyOshim appeared is the refinement of a soul through time. There are such spaces that I can't think but feel. I always follow the extensiveness of it being with my emotion.
Another element of TommyOshimworks which still impresses me is the awesome range of every condensed moment from real life, and he took all of them without artificial setting!
The point of view from his eyes is a an inborn gift! It is totally unmatchable! No one would miss or fail to see. Such beauty exists here to all who would stop and feel. Do you see it? Just looks like the fluid time is frozen, and waiting to be born......""

"tommy has too many testimonials already....
anyway - ok - probably world's best photographer. true. but what i don't get is how he has time and energy not only to produce gigantic quantities of the incredible and extremely varied photos, but also to spend huuuuge amounts of time helping and encouraging us mere mortals. and has a day job?
maybe the great tommyoshima is not really a person - one person that is - maybe its a whole office block of super talented underground photographers and back office staff scannning and developing on round the clock shifts.
maybe the guy you see in the photos is just an actor fronting this multi-million photo operation...
that has as its offices - buildings based closely on james bond bad guy film sets in which beautiful japanese ladies come and go dressed only in vintage russian camera straps.
until i meet someone who has met him in person. i will continue with this theory."

Frédéric Poirot says:
"I would not say Tommy is a Master, because it would imply being at the ultimate level of an art after years of long practice. Tommy Oshima is instead a natural photographer, a natural artist, able to directly channel his own emotions from his eyes up to our optical nerves and psyche. And more importantly, he share his vision with an extreme generosity and honesty that makes his work so personal and so emotional. Thanx for all, Mr Oshima, you are definitely my biggest inspiration."

It is very rare to see someone that has technical ability, inspiration and imagination and the skill it takes to bring all these together on a regular basis. Very well done."

"TOMMY OSHIMA is the most wonderful conductor of Light and Energy i've ever come accross! Beautiful SOULFUL Grunge mixed with raw Jazz and crafted with the hands and knowledge of a TRUE connoisseur of Moods. For me the journey started with the amazing SILENCIO on fotologue, and the rest is a history full of inspiration, encouragement and drive by a wonderful Charisma everytime i see that pigeonarium icon floating around.

Apart from being a terrific photographer, Mr. Oshima is also a very generous and kind person who always gives comments to my photos, which I somehow think I don't deserve them. :p

March 12th, 2006
"tommy is not only one of the flickr's greatest, but also the photographer i want to become.
to be able to create the mystery and the magic like he does is a very rare and awe-inspiring talent. each of his works is so full of feeling, so telling, so delicate, that describing it stretches beyond words. he captures the zeitgeist of our days with such immaculate self-confidence and precision, and nevertheless remains one of the most soulful artists i know. that delightful sentiment he creates is always there - in his amazing portraiture, in shots as everyday and ordinary as that of a cat in a dark alley or a bird on a concrete fence; or images of street signs and strangers in the underground - what he paints, what he knows so well is the heart of the city - dark and gloomy but always so full of life.
he says that photography won't tell you the truth (and that is true! :), but i wish the truth was more like his art."
