Special Olympics Belize (SOBz), an affiliate of Special Olympics International based in Washington DC, is the only organization in Belize, Central America, providing year round sports training and athletic competitions for children and adults with intellectual disabilities and other disabilities in Olympic-type sports. Special Olympics Belize was founded in 1992 when 60 persons with intellectual disabilities had their first experience of the transformative power of the Special Olympics movement. Today, with over 500 registered athletes from the 6 Districts of Belize, 5 National Games, 3 World Summer Games participation, provision of public health service screenings, training of health care professionals and youth leadership development and offering of other allied services to persons with disabilities in Belize, Special Olympics Belize has become one of the most acclaimed NGOs and the leading advocacy organ in the country for the full integration of persons with intellectual disabilities and other disabilities into the mainstream society.
