Missing middle homes, like ADUs, backyard cottages, mother-in-law suites, and duplexes provide affordable rental and purchase options than single, detached houses. But in many urban neighborhoods, zoning makes these modest choices illegal to add, retrofit, or build. Often, zoning changes -- upzones -- that would allow a return to a range of mixed-income home types is met with local opposition. One reason is that people aren't familiar with what missing middle homes look like. Photos of these modest homes help community members see how multi-family buildings fit into the community fabric.
