The chief justice for the Massachusetts Appeals Court, Scott Kafker possesses more than three decades of legal experience and over 15 years of experience in the court of appeals. He was sworn into office in 2015 after he became the first judicial appointment of Gov. Charlie Baker. Scott Kafker’s court holds jurisdiction over all civil and criminal appeals with the exception of first-degree murder charges.
He served as an adjunct faculty for Boston College Law School directly prior to his appointment as chief justice. His courses covered constitutional law and explored the structure, history, and texts of state constitutions. At the time he was teaching Scott Kafker also served as a Massachusetts Appeals Court associate justice, which enabled his students to learn from a professor with practical and current knowledge of the courts.
Scott Kafker earned his juris doctor from the University of Chicago Law School in 1985. As a student he worked on The University of Chicago Law Review as a staff member and associate editor. After graduating he was asked to serve on the law school’s visiting committee, an honor given to distinguished graduates.
