Zakuro Aoyama is a Brazilian artist whose drawings reinvigorate our concept of line. His deft use of stimulating textures, rhythmic line, and patterns of light and dark assemble in new ways to reveal the landscapes of worlds which dwell in the metaphorical penumbra. Light and shadow shift and weave in and out of primordial drives to become romantic forms that merge with other inky or silvery entities. Aoyama employs sinuous marks to traverse untrodden corridors of the psyche with a boldness similar to Austin Osman Spare, Harry Clarke, Franz von Bayros, and other masters of line. The subtle eroticism flowing through some examples of his work is always guided by his aesthetic sensibility. He works in ink, pencil, watercolor and acrylics.

Aoyama is inspired by the other arts including film, music, and literature. In particular, he appreciates the cinema work of Michel Haneke and Andrey Tarkovsky, writings by Edgar Allan Poe and the poetry of Charles Baudelaire. His drawings have been talked about on BOOOOOOOM, Cross Connect Magazine, and Hi-Fructose.
