I’m best known as the author of The Map Room, a blog about maps, and DFL, a blog about last-place finishes at the Olympics. When I’m not blogging, writing or correcting other people's grammar, I raise snakes, play the piano, and look through my telescope.

Here on Flickr, you will frequently see me trying my hand at astrophotography (for example, photographing the Moon), identifying snakes in other people’s photos (for example, I follow the "gartersnake" tag, and often let people know when what they have isn't a garter snake), and mercilessly photographing innocent science fiction writers at conventions. But mostly taking pictures of the cats. My cat-infested Instagram account exports here as well.

Copyright and permissions

My photos are covered by a Creative Commons licence. You don't need to ask my permission to use them so long as (1) it's for non-commercial purposes and (2) you credit me as the photographer.

Contact me if your non-commercial purposes require a higher-resolution photo or, if you want to use it for commercial purposes, to discuss terms and payment. If you're not sure whether your use is commercial or non-commercial, contact me. I'm usually pretty reasonable.

For more information, see the FAQ on my personal website.

My camera gear

At the moment I shoot with a Nikon D7100 digital SLR and an iPhone 5.

From time to time I also use one of two compact cameras: a Canon PowerShot S100, which was The One I Had with Me before I got the iPhone, and a weatherproof Nikon Coolpix AW100, for when the weather outside is frightful.

Previous cameras include a Nikon D90 (2008-2013), a Canon PowerShot SD780 (2009-2011), a Nikon D40 (2006-2008) and a Nikon Coolpix 995 (2002-2006).
