Kyle Herranen is a Canadian interdisciplinary artist born and raised in the boreal forest of northern Ontario whose work addresses complex issues of culture, nature, and the environment. He studied Classical Animation at Sheridan College (1997) before earning his BFA at York University (2004) and receiving his MFA from the University of Regina (2008). Kyle was included in Mind the Gap! (Dunlop Art Gallery), a National touring exhibition featuring prominent emerging artists, which toured to Ottawa for Prairie Scene (Ottawa Art Gallery). His work has since been shown in international exhibitions in London, UK and Bilbao, Spain along with notable exhibitions in Toronto, Winnipeg, Ottawa, Regina, and Sudbury. He also has a permanent installation in Canada House, Canada’s Embassy in London UK commissioned by Canada Foreign Affairs Trade and Development in association with the National Gallery of Canada. Kyle’s art is featured in numerous corporate, private, and public collections across Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom including the Mosaic Corporation, the City of Regina, and the Dunlop Art Gallery, as well as in a growing number of private collections around the globe. In the fall of 2012 Galleries West named Kyle one of Canada’s “Who’s Who of Collectable Artists.” Kyle has been the recipient on numerous awards including most recently the Regina Mayor’s Arts and Business Award in 2014 for Mid-Career Artist. He is best known for his highly polished shallow relief resin sculptures that de-code contemporary notions of aesthetics and how these socially constructed realities both parallel and reject nature and the environment. As an outdoorsman, along with fighting forest fires across North America for nine years, he is rooted in a bizarre, absurd, and meaningful intersection between nature and culture. These dominant cultural dichotomies are rendered through a rigorous practice of installation, video, photography, painting, and performance. Kyle currently lives and works in Regina Saskatchewan and is represented by Darrell Bell Gallery in Saskatoon, Gurevich Fine Art in Winnipeg, and SLATE Fine Art Gallery in Regina.
