KHS Groups

Have You Lived in Kununurra? KHS Flickr GROUP

Have You Lived in Kununurra?
Kununurra has always had a very transient population, so KHS is seeking past and present Kununurra residents, for a project to celebrate these 50th and 70th anniversaries by calling on all businesses, Government Departments, Organisations, Clubs, Associations, and especially people to supply and share a history of their Kununurra involvements. These can be complex or as simple as you like, in documents and object form with real photographs posted to the archive, or in any electronic document format. Please DO include images if you can. KHS has also started a new Flickr Group with the same title, where anybody can upload their Ord history images to pool our images of the Ord and share short histories, in image descriptions.

Have You Lived in Kununurra? - Group Profile Page is at www.flickr.com/groups/have-you-lived-in-kununurra/ - Join the Group and share your images and history to take part in this history.

KHS has started three other groups along these lines.

Other Group Photo Pools Initiated and Administered by KHS.

“Have You Lived In..” Groups:
Have You Lived in Kununurra? – www.flickr.com/groups/have-you-lived-in-kununurra/ and

Calling all Archives
KHS is utilising the Flickr platform to make archives accessibile and wishes to call all other archives, libraries, museums, historical societies and any collecting institutions, government or private to seek out and submit, any images they may have, relating to Ord River/East Kimberley history, to this new pool of resources and help KHS show the great significance of this young, but incredibly fascinating, 55 years of Kununurra and 75 years of Ord River Irrigation history in 2016.

KHS Original 2010/2011 Digitisation Program
Many of the first 1500 images you will see were digitised with the assistance of a major grant from the Shire of Wyndham East Kimberley (SWEK), for equipment and a digitisation program.

As part of that program, Kununurra Pharmacy donated a new film quality scanner to the program and gave a great discount on the new 18 Megapixel Canon 550D that all of the "Now & Then" photographs were taken with and will be used for items larger than the scanner.

KHS Digitisation Standards
This digitisation program continues unassisted, carrying out to JS Battye Library of WA History and State Library of WA digitisation standards (as did the original program in 2010/11). Masters saved as TIF to recommended minimum of 4800 pixels on the long side of an image (KHS saving 5500 pixel images).

The images on this site are much smaller at 800 pixels on the long side of the image, saved as 100% jpg quality, however High Resolution images are available and can be ordered.

Dust on Slides
Why is there dust on images from slides? KHS is digitising all archive material as it has come into the archive prior to any major slide cleaning program. Imagine cleaning a slide and losing or damaging that image. This is our preservation insurance. Most dust is blown off the slides, however some slides stored in PVC plastic have "sweated" PVC and the dust onto some slides (The worst looking).

For an interesting archive preservation hint for successful storage of your important documents and papers read more about an archive safe alternative to PVC plastics, in the description for the image in this link. Read about the
