Flickrology:

Flickr started (May, 2007) as a way to easily share my business travel photos with my family/friends, at the time I had a 2 MP Fuji with 8 megs of memory so they were usually 640X480 snapshots but on a trip to Germany/Italy I was introduced to a nice little Canon that belonged to a colleague of mine (thanks Albert!), and so shortly after getting back I decided to upgrade to a 7 MP GE with a 4X telephoto lens and 1 gig of memory.

Skip forward a few weeks to when I started posting a few of my photos on an online radio station photography forums (www,radioparadise.com). The Radio Paradise “community” has some really talented artists that gave great feedback/encouragement which of course spurred me on.

After only a short time it became apparent that the GE was not versatile enough for me to learn at the rate at which I desired so I again upgraded this time to the Lumix DMC-FZ8 that I have now and although it is still a fairly simple point & shoot it does have a great 12X lens and some of the advanced features of an DSLR (although not the speed or high ISO image quality)

Upgraded to a Nikon D80 January 2009 and love it!

The gear:

02/04/08 Panasonic FZ8

01/22/09 Nikon D80 & the Sigma 18-200 HSM OS lens

4/01/09 added a Nikkor 50mm 1.8

08/11/09 added the Dolica AX620B100 62-Inch Proline Tripod and Ball Head

10/01/09 added a Tokina .5 wide angle conversion lens

01/18/10 added a Nikkor 35mm 1.8 & a Targus Digital TG-DL80N Pro Zoom Auto TTL Electronic Flash

06/16/10 added the 36,20 & 12mm Opteka macro extension tubes

07/09/10 added a Photo Studio Flash Mount Umbrellas Kit & a MC-DC1 Digital Timer Remote Control Shutter Release

10/1/10 added an Opteka HD² 0.20X Fisheye conversion lens to the mix

10/23/10 NPT-04 4 Channel Wireless Hot Shoe Flash Trigger and two Receivers

12/25/10 Nikkor 18-55 VR (for attaching the fisheye mostly)

12/25/10 Opteka 500mm mirror lens

12/25/10 Newar macro ring light

4/20/11 Added a Yn-460ii manually adjustable flash for my umbrella

8/10/12 D80 died, replaced with D5100

Post processing:

I find it amusing when people proudly state that a photo is “straight out of camera” as if no processing was done, but with just a minute or two of reading you will learn that unless you shoot in RAW the camera is adjusting everything of every pixel of that image to make it as small of a file as possible and still retain some resemblance of what the sensor captured.

Sooooo I judge an image by its impact on me, not if someone lets a camera decide or uses external software to decide what the final output is :-))))

Please feel free to give advice as constructive criticism is always welcome!

Enjoy yourself (or a least fake it:-)

Wink and I have been friends now for almost three years. I tried to go back into his stream to find that first photo I commented on; but Flickr was not cooperating and I had to give up. Instead, I went back to the first photo he posted--my how the look has changed, LOL! From a fresh-faced cowboy to kind of a grizzly old fart--har! har! You know me, W--always up for making you laugh, tell me you're not chuckling right about now! All kidding aside--it was interesting to look at Wendell's early posts (talent was showing; but hadn't yet evolved into what we see today). He had so many pics with no comments, maybe one or two--three on a good day; but look at him now. I consider Wink one of the best buddies I have on Flickr and one of the most creative with his photography and post processing. He is loved by everyone who knows him (and I am not blowing smoke on this statement, it's so true). Like most of us, he's had some bumps along the road of life; but he does what he can to make things better and the things that he can't change--I think he probably says WTF and moves on. It's truly been a pleasure to know you, Wendell--I hope we can meet in person someday (I'd even bake you a pie or cake, LOL). Sending lots of hugs and much love to you darlin!

I have struggled to find a way to express my appreciation for Wink as an artist, but keep ending up with a shiny skyscraper pedestal to perch him on. On the off chance he's afraid of heights, and more to protect my neck from strain as I crane it upwards, I have decided to build him something different to perch on. The more I come to know him, the more I appreciate what a free-spirited genuine person he really is. Yes his artistic expressions are an inspiration to many, but I am finding that he touches so many people moreso just by being himself. I think he could post a shot of solid black nothing and we would all swarm to it like moths to a flame, and most of us would learn from it too. I am grateful to have found a friend in him and can't even express how much I have benefited from our association. For you wink, a pedestal made of laughter and kindness, supported by intelligence, talent, and a damn good steak with potatoes and something unidentifiable but delicious looking, maybe some rice wine vinigar too:) You are the kind of person that makes this site a pleasure. I've known Wink since 2007 where we virtually met on the Radio Paradise Photography Forum. His photos were the rage back then and he never failed to impress the other members with his magic! Although we have never met, I consider him a friend and compadre. He has taught me new ways to express myself as he has nurtured my HDR skills with his tips, tutorials and his photography. For that I will always be grateful! What is more miraculous, is how, through his own Flickr group, ...Wink's Place..., he had bought over 3200 of flickr's most talented members with over 132,000 photographs, together in one brilliant community of kindred souls who share their passion, talents and friendship here. Many of these members are also photographers I personally know here in Germany, who coincidentally are also enthusiastic members of Wink's place! Blows me away how a single man can, as effortlessly and compassionately, reach so many people and bring them all together in one happy place! Hats off to you, Wendel! I look forward to many more years of your photography, friendship and fun times! Steve "ScopPics/ScopArch" Coppenbarger

Wendell was 10 minutes late but we held the boat for him anyway. He phoned us the day before and said that a whale watching trip was just what he needed. Sprinting like an olympic marathoner, he was carrying 2 bags, which we did not check because of our late departure. Catching his breath, he opened one bag which revealed some nice photographic equipment. The other, and quite a bit larger bag stayed zipped. It wasn't until we started seeing some pacific blue whales when he opened up that second bag, putting together a surface to water harpoon with poison tip arrows. A few of the other passengers started into a fisticuffs with him, so to quell the emotions of the others I pulled Wink aside and asked him his intentions of this harpoon. He said he wanted just one great photo of a whale, and what better way to do it than to harpoon it. I informed him as a lover of all animals, tasty and not, that we were unable to allow him to poach the great mammals and that we could spend a little extra time circling them for his own personal photographic ambitions. The harpoon did come in handy as our small vessel was attacked by sea pirates. These were a new breed of pirates; college students fed up with the high price of lite beer, who would use the money they looted from whale watching charter boats off California to fund their weekend inebriations. So we all ended up thanking Wendell for bringing the harpoon he bought off ebay, and at the end of the day shared photos of our journey. He had many great whale photos, but perhaps my favorite photo was one of a harpoon sinking the inflatable recreation raft of the collegiate pirates as a group of 19yo frat boys attempted to swim to shore.

Wendell is someone you genuinely appreciate because he sees the world differently, and with his camera, he finds an interesting way to share his take on life with the rest of us. I appreciate Wendell's willingness to experiment in his photography without losing his sense of quality. I have learned some valuable tricks from Wendell, including how to produce a good HDR photo and how to find just the right angle to create an interesting shot. I always enjoy my daily visits to his photostream, and I am grateful when he stops by to visit my work. I can see Wendell going somewhere with his photography in the future. While few of us are willing to give up our day jobs, I can see him teaching photography on the side at the local community college or art school. And for some reason, I can see him spending time in the world of street photography where the true grit, humor, and tears of life can be readily found. When I think of Wendell's photography, the following Henry David Thoreau quote comes to mind: "The world is but a canvas to the imagination." I think that is how I would sum up Wendell and his contribution to photography and the Flickr community. ~Don Iannone

Wendell, or Wink as he is also known, stumbled across the desert that was my photostream not so long ago. In fact, I began to consider that he visited my photostream more often than I did. Wink has been quick to comment and fav and for that I am grateful. But, this would not be a very good testimonial if I did not mention the work he produces and presents wonderfully in his Flickr photostream. Wink is deliberate in his work and offers a view of the world around him that is indeed refreshing in so many important ways. He also experiments with differing techniques and effects to his credit as the output of his work is amazing. Wink's work will inspire and amaze. Take a look around his photostream and you'll soon come to realize that for yourself.

Wink never ceases to amaze me with his creativity. He is a true artist in all he does, whether it be working with wood, creating gardens; and especially, taking pictures. His dry wit shows in the titles he chooses and his soul shines through the camera lens. You just can't get any better than that.
