I am an Analog photographer with the majority of my time spent documenting and capturing the life & light in New York City. I use almost exclusively plastic, Kodak, Russian or Polaroid cameras. I shoot in black and white, medium format.

Subject matter and composition are more important to me than the endless settings that digital cameras and Photoshop can provide. Following natural light and understanding how to shoot it is more interesting to me. I never crop my work. Everything is done in camera.

I have shot digital professionally, in fact I owe my interest in street photography to a job that I had shooting the neighborhoods and street events within the five boroughs of New York City.

Several months ago I purchased a Samsung Note 3 and have been using the camera feature to create a tumblr blog of digital photography that I enjoy quite well. Again, while I am not cropping I have been manipulating the images with color.

Since 2002 I had been posting a photo of the day on my main photography site, (www.hnorthrop.com) and only in the last two years have I been working on a book and website devoted to the best of 10 years of that photography. Separately, I am also working on a book of my Polaroids. At this stage of my life I think it is important for me to turn around and take an honest look at the work I have been producing for the past 20 years. This has been a rather eye opening project. Discovering who I am as a photographer is beginning to point me in different directions of creative inspiration.
