    Frameless Formations says:

"There is nothing that haven't been said in praise of Brooke's work but I had to write this testimonial to show appreciation for how she and her work has made a difference in my life.

Yes, her work is whimsical, mesmerizing and thought provoking...but what amazes me even more is her golden soul. She is like a flood of positive energy and thoughts. I remember, a few years back I liked one of her image so much that I wrote her a flickrmail and asked how she achieved that effect and guess what... she replied back with all the details. I was happily surprised to see someone who isn't insecure and doesn't seem to believe in the idea of "trade secrets" :P
That was just the beginning... with time she has kept surprising me more and more. Even all the awards and fame haven't tinted her a bit. She is still the same happy and humble person.

Brooke, you make me believe that anything is possible... that world is a beautiful place and dreams can really come true...that money can not stop you from imagining and achieving.... and more ...You make me believe that everything is perfect just as it is :)"

    Aaron Sehmar says:

"I first stumbled across the work of Brooke Shaden on a website called cgunit.net where i was rather intrigued by the image i saw which was this:
www.flickr.com/ph... little did i know that this was to possibly change the direction of my life.
After a few hours of research i found brookes flickr stream which to me was photographic heaven. everything i look for in photographs were there, created by this girl who wanted nothing more to then to create worlds in which she wanted to live in. well i want to live in them too.

For me, brooke's images are filled with mystery, imagination and complexity that emphasies her photographical talent as well as her ability to think outside the box. i find her work to be a constant source of indication due the way that her images are so thought out; the way that every last and minor detail counts and adds to the overall picture and how she is trying to capture the viewers imagination by creating such surrealistic yet believable imagery. her work is the epitome of creativity and i feel that just looking at her work has made me more creative and determined to seek a career in photography. i also think that by shooting behind the scenes videos not only gives us an awsome indication of the person behind the photographs but it makes her work more personal and it has also opened my eyes how easy it is to create such masterpieces. all you need is a concept.

i definitley think that the work of brooke shaden has quite possibly changed my life and i just hope that she never stops. :)"

    Di Mastromatteo says:

"Brooke is not only my daughter, but someone her dad and I can be so proud of in so many ways. She was a bit of a late bloomer, and with continuous determination with everything she has ever done, she never gives up. Brooke found her footing after starting college at Temple University. Film was her major, and with a love for writing, added English as a second major to her loves. Through her young journey, she also found the love of her life at the tender age of 16. He has been her rock through this process of self discovery. Only recently did I realize after a visit alone with her just how solid that bond was and has only continued to grow.
Brooke discovered her passion for photography soon after graduating from Temple. In three and a half years while tutoring kids in English for extra money she graduated with two degree's and a minor... slacker was not in her vocabulary. She could not sit still, so she picked up her camera, and within weeks called to tell me she had a new love for story telling and that she could see her style was emerging. She and her husband moved to California within one month of her graduation. The first day in Cali. she had a job at Mandalay as a receptionist, and could spend hours working on her photos. People noticed her talent, and she soon had the eye of her co-workers. She was offered lots of money, to which she thought long and hard about, and turned down, because her vision was hers and hers alone. She is not only a role model for people around the world, but me as well. I'm always telling her, "I want to be just like you when I grow up", and I mean it! I always strive to create and have my own artistic style when creating a new hairstyle, or color for the people I spend my days with. People are my canvas, and they tell my artist story. Brooke I love you, and keep shinning that light as brightly as you can! There are many following, me included. Love, Mom"

"I wouldn't even know where to begin when talking about Brookes work... She has been a huge inspiration to me from the very start of my photographic journey, and even more so recently when I began a series of location portraiture in the mountains and woods - every location, every piece of flowing material and hair blowing in the wind, every last detail was inspired by Brooke. Her images truly do look like something out of another, more magical world than our own, and every time I view one of them I feel as though I myself am part of that dream land. Not only is she incredibly talented, she's a lovely person and always very willing to help out anyone who messages her. I'd jump at the chance to ever work with Brooke - it'd be a dream come true if she ever came over to England to teach classes and I'd be one of the first to sign up for such an amazing opportunity. Thank you so much Brooke, for all the inspiration you've given me over the past year!"

"There is nobody on this planet who inspires me as much as Brooke. She is lovely, wonderful, kind and of course, crazy talented. She has created this style that people are obsessed with. That is pretty amazing when you think about it. When you realize the explosion of photography and photoshop art. People know her work even if they dont know her name. Every night I pray and every day I try to be more like her. Not just professionally, but personally .. and as a true fan I understand that doesn't mean to copy her. It means to define my own style, to dream big, to be unique. Thank you for everything you do for us Brooke. God Bless"

    Alex Kemsley says:

"Brooke is honestly the one most inspirational and talented person I have ever known.
Words can't describe how much respect I have for Brooke. Her work is constantly of an astoundingly high level.
With concepts of beautiful complexity and perfectly executed editing, the masterpieces Brooke creates are stunning.
Her work is unique and depicts worlds which I don't believe have ever been equalled in photography.
Brooke Shaden is the future of photography.

One of the many reasons why I respect Brooke so much, is her constant patience and consideration for others - especially those like me, who are new to photography. She is always supportive and unbelievably generous. Brooke is truly one of those kind souls that are rare to find nowadays, and even more so in the competitive art world, where secrets are guarded so carefully. Brooke treats everyone with incredible amounts of respect and always finds time to help us.

The way Brooke sculpts her craft so diligently, with love and care, is nothing short of inspirational.

Brooke, you have helped me SO much with my start in photography. You've always had time to answer my questions, and you've always been a great inspiration. Kind, talented, and generous, you are sure to achieve truly great things.

You give so much, Brooke, and on behalf of myself and the whole of the Flickr community, thank you :)"

"I don't think I have anything to say about Brooke that hasn't already been mentioned...but she has to know how much of an inspiration she is to me.

She creates such emotive portraits that force you to feel. I firmly believe that art is about tugging at people's heart strings and forcing them to address things about themselves and the world that they may not want to address but need to. Brooke's portraits do that and I greatly admire it!

I only hope she realizes how much of an influence she has on flickr. Honestly? I sometimes think of her as the Queen of flickr. I don't think there's a person on flickr who doesn't know about her and her amazing work! She absolutely deserves it too!

Keep up the good work, Brooke! You are continuously inspiring people like myself to do better and form our own artistic identities."

"Brooke Shaden, now where do I start?

I'm not even sure, because I don't know if it will ever be possible to put into words the way that your artwork and even you yourself make me feel but here's my best shot.

You are, without a doubt, my biggest influence and inspiration; both as a person and a photographer/artist. Your work is always inspiring to me. Every time I see a new photo it always makes me inspired to go and try to push myself to create a character, a feeling or a seemingly whole new world with just a single image! With your photos you create endless possibilities. I can think up stories or characters with every time I look at an image. I don't know if I have yet to achieve this feeling with any of my own work but I want to be able to create with such freedom like you do.

I also hope to be able to achieve my own uniqueness as you have. You have a style that is all your own, even though you didn't invent levitation's or come up with the idea to use nude models your uniqueness always shines through. And not only that but it shines through with a simplicity and maturity to each one. You don't feel the need to use an excessive amount of props, which I respect because I like being able to sense emotion from a photo and I find that a person emits that much more than any prop could. And you always portray emotions well.

Now, as a person I know I've grown into who I am now, in part, because of you. You seem like such a beautiful person on flickr, and formspring. I've even asked you for advice a couple of times on formspring, and everytime your advice was so helpful and kind. I hope someday to go to one of your workshops and meet you... Or even just meet you! It would mean the world to me and I would get to cross one thing off my bucket list. (: you're and amazing photographer and a beautiful person and I can only hope I achieve even half of what you have in life. I don't know how, but I wish that someday I'll be able to do what you're doing, photography and art for a living.

So, Thank you, Brooke. For being an incredibly kind, patient, unique, creative and inspiring person and artist. For teaching me kindness, creativity, and that being unique is an amazing thing and should be praised not shunned. Don't ever stop being who you are; a truly amazing person. (:

"Brooke, I know you aren't short of testimonials already but I wanted to write my first ever testimonial to you because you are my absolute biggest inspiration. Nearly a year ago, I stumbled across your stream while browsing on flickr for pictures for a school project and I was completely stunned by what you did with photography. I always pictured photography as landscapes and nature photography or fashion photography for magazines but you used it in such a beautiful way that I had never thought about before. Once I started having a go at using photoshop and putting concepts behind my work I started to really love creating images and since then, I haven't stopped! As soon as I heard you were coming to London for a workshop I was in there straight away and it was the best thing ever to finally meet you! I decided to take a 2 year, full time photography course starting next year and can't wait to be able to create images with more time! You are such a massive inspiration to me and so many other people and a wonderful person. Thank you Brooke for helping me find what I love the most :)."

    Polen Erciyas says:

"I have been thinking about this for a long time, because I want this testimonial to interpret as much as what's in my mind.
    Dear Brooke Shaden,

The one person that is infinitely talented, so talented, that, even an individual with the emptiest mind on earth can look at her art, and his mind would start to fill with ideas.

The one person that is incredibly warm, with an endless patience when approaching to the people that admire her. I'm sure if she had the time, she actually would sit down and try to answer each and every question that everyone has to ask her. I have never, ever seen her speak words of anger/ hatred/ fury/ jealousy to others.Even when she was offended or insulted by thoughtless people.

The one person that showed no signs of egoism or arrogance , although with her talent and popularity, most people would. She is so down to earth, so friendly that I find it hard to believe very often.

The one person that has pulled me inside her photography instantly, showed me what photography was capable of, what it could achieve in terms of the kind of art that I like to taste. I could stare at her art for hours and not be bored for one second to look at the carefully embroidered details hidden in them and "wow!" each time.

The one person that was just so kind to care to write me a note with the dress I purchased from her. The one incredibly-big-hearted girl to send a hug to someone she doesn't even know, but, whom I know was sincere when doing so.

    Dear Brooke Shaden,
Thank you for being an extreme example of a true artist, with all aspects that you have shown to me, and with all aspects I haven't yet had the chance to see. It is one of the things that's in my "Bucket List" to fly to the other end of the world to attend one of your workshops or just to meet you, even.

I hope our paths cross someday. Sending you an even bigger hug from far, far away.
Keep your wonderful brain always dreaming,

    Polen."

"Brooke is without a doubt my favourite photographer. ever. Not only has she inspired me to experiment, and develop my photographic skills, but she has inspired me to become a better person. A more mature person, a more accepting person, and most definitely a person with a much broader perspective. If it wasn't for this remarkable soul, I wouldn't have even considered photography as a hobby, and I wouldn't have this growing, and strong passion for conceptual photography that I have now...and now it's more than a hobby for me, it's a lifestyle. Her artwork takes me through this journery of discovery, and imagination, and I'm able to fall into this world that evolved from her outstandingly creative and passionate artistic visions. The meanings behind her images are mind blowing, and all seem to revolve around questioning what it means to be alive. In a way it provokes confrontation to one's life. It makes one realize, and understand their state of minds, and how they influence the way they live. I am so grateful, that I've been given the chance to become close in a way, with this inspirational photographer and person and I can confidently say she'll introduce many, many more people into the world of conceptual art, and help guide them to best of her ability. :) lots of love."

"Photography is a funny medium especially when you factor in art. I feel like the vast majority of photographers aren't artists. The technology is so accessible that a lot of people just end up faffing around and producing images that don't really say anything.

Brooke more so than nearly any photographer I know is an artist. She makes the medium she's using invisible compared to the final image - you don't care if it's a photo or not and I think there is something very laudable about that. In a world where photography is dominated by what camera or lens your using it's relieving to see someone just produce exceptional work.

So yes, Brooke - please please keep doing what you do."

    Helen Warner (airgarten) says:

"Hello Brooke! Yay I can post this testimonial now!

Like many, I love the world you have created through photographs. All your pieces seem to revolve around one theme, existence. Whether your subject is running away, faceless, realizing the meaning of his/her own life, you always seem to capture a moment that encapsulates the sheer magnitude of purely existing. I love that you play with this theme, your photographs cannot be pinned down chronologically, they seem timeless, flowing, the subjects become ghosts of the past or ideas of the future. I love how you show femininity in such a raw way, dirty feet, blood, some of your pictures nearly reflect body tissue to me, wombs (the ongoing sac series), and therefore playing with pure existence, birth and death. The narrative seems to be feminine, the journey of a woman through time. Trying to be elegant but falling, little girls that are no longer, failed ballerinas, the oh so clumsy dancers...you convey all of this in the most unpretentious way, it seems nearly completely natural, so far from something that was snatched with the click of a camera. All the while managing to make even the most dark photograph beautiful by nearly painting them. I can see that photography is something you not only do, but need to do and i love that!
As I said in my email, i was hoping that you would publish a book. Now you have! It looks like a pure delight for the eyes and is now top priority on my xmas wish list. It will sit up there with many other visuals artists published works that have inspired me.
All the best, nurture you fantastic world, keep it alive, you have an oh so beautiful imagination...
    Love from Ireland!

    Helen :)"

The fact that I can look through her streme everyday and STILL have to stop and look at every photo, just shows how timeless and amazing her work is.

Brooke is magical, to say the least. I was talking to a friend one time; I was explaining how photography was an art, but he did not believe me, he thought it was just family snap shots you take every Christmas. Immediately, the first person that came to my mind was Brooke, and I lead to show him your work.

Brooke is not a photographer, she is an artist. She does not take pictures, she creates them."

"I am so thankful that I had the good fortune of stumbling upon this stream a year ago, and finding Brooke Shaden. She has not only been a tremendous source of inspiration in my life, but she has become a dear friend. On top of being the incredible tour-de-force photographer she is, she is also kind, humble and incredibly sweet. Seeing in person her work ethic, her unflinching passion towards her art and her vision, is truly awe-inspiring. She puts all other photographers to shame with her quick shooting and endlessly growing portfolio. She's only just started, and look at all she's done!

What is so unique about Brooke's work is that it engages the viewer, challenging them to not merely admire, but also think. There are not many photographers out there that actually make you stop and think about something, and that I believe, is one of the most powerful things about her photos.

In my opinion, Brooke is where photography is headed. She has already made such an enormous impact on flickr after only doing this for a little under two years. If she keeps at it, I have no doubt she will change the photography world at large with her thought-provoking work."

Her photos are far from being snapshots. They’re all well thought out: perfectly executed in all the aspects, from the concept part to the shooting and editing. They’re emotive, strong. They make you stop and think. With her dark, unique style she provokes feelings and emotions in the people, and I think that’s the biggest compliment an artist can get. There are lots of users on Flickr who take beautiful photos, but very few achieve all that."

"It’s still sort of weird being able to say that I am Brooke’s friend and Brooke is mine. For the longest time, I envied her talent, and I still do. Brooke is such a creative soul; more should learn from her, her photographs as well as her mind.

Brooke is such a beautiful person, she really is. She’s one of those people that you wish you could be, and it may take a while to achieve such. She is such a kind person but a joking one as well. She even has one of my teddy bears at the moment, though when I’ll get him back, the world may never know. :P

Brooke is also a magical person. She creates images and photographs that no one else would even dare to create, startling images that confuse the mind but images that also scream beauty and talent more than anything.

Brooke is such an inspiration. Being able to do what she’s done, it’s just inspiring. She has her own style, but that’s definitely not a bad thing. She manages to create something beautiful out of something grotesque, and that in itself is a hard thing to do. She can even manage to make a blank wall look magical.

Whenever I am asked “Who is your favorite artist?” one of the first names to pop into my mind is the name Brooke Shaden. Who else would cut off a teddy bears head just for an image? (Though, of course, I helped to sew it back on, haha.) Who else stretches an image’s boundaries and can create an immensely different photograph every time she tries? Who else can create such expression with a hidden face? I cannot think of any such person besides Brooke.

Her photographs are wonderful, and if you do not think so, I will smack you upside the head.

    xx Sarah"

"It is hard to put into words that which defies classification; such is the case for Brooke Shaden. Magical…Beautiful…Haunting…Brilliant – All of these are apt descriptions of her work. However, her work is so much more than just photography. By herself, she is creating a whole new artform; blending photography and painting and mythology under the command of raw feminine energy.

Arresting – that is the affect her images have on the viewer. They hold you and draw you into the dreamworld of her canvas. Belying her diminutive stature, she has enough passion and creative energy to leave you in awe at her creations. She is quite literally one of the best artists you will find on Flickr."

"Boy, was I honored when Brooke added me back as a contact. :) I've been wanting to write her a testimonial, but kept forgetting, haha.

Brooke is one of my earliest Flickr-finds and since then has been one of my biggest inspirations. Her photos are so insightful and have so much meaning and symbolism behind each and every detail. I love reading her though-process on her blog, because it helps me better understand her work. Clearly, Brooke spends time to plan and perfect each of her photos because, as I've stated, every single detail is symbolic. Conceptualism is something that seems to have died, almost like chivalry, but Brooke is one of the few who are keeping it alive with her solely conceptual-based art, and I admire her for that. She does so much for photography, and doesn't have a problem with being stared at while doing her thing, something that I need to overcome, haha. I strive to be as great at photography when I'm 22, and I would love to meet Brooke and possibly do a collab with her. :)

P.S. I'd loveee to go to your gallery, but I can't afford a plane ticket to L.A. :[

"Other than the fact that Brooke's photos are technically unique, inventive and work in perfect harmony, the honesty and the ''self'' she places in them are what sets them apart from the rivers of photos seen every day. Upon seeing these works of art one can only feel compelled to improve oneself in many ways, not just in photography, but in whatever one finds enjoyable. She sees the world unique to herself but finds a way to connect it to her viewers, surely a very, very difficult thing to do, especially to a contemporary artist. What I appreciate about her stream in general is the fact that she does not post just anything, but she waits to improve on one technique she's working on, and then dazzles the audience.
I honestly believe that she's going places, far far grander than flickr."

"I am kicking myself for not writing this sooner - because you have been an inspiration since I first saw your 'Bobblehead' picture.
It wasn't the image itself that was so captivating, it was the emotion that I felt, and the story I made up in my own imagination looking at it, which to me is what makes you one of the best - you make the mind breathe deeper.
Yours are not just photos - they are stories that evolve and contort as you look at them. I feel myself being drawn down into every piece of your art. I can feel that pulse, that little quiver under the skin in everything that you create and it is sublime.
It is not art that you create, what you do is the living, evolving manifestation of yourself, and I am continually awed and humbled at the talent you have to convey it with such profound simple beauty and elegance.

"There is a great deal of inflated praise lavished on unspectacular photography on Flickr. Don’t get me wrong, there are many talented folks posting photos on-line. Much of this work is solid and craftsman-like.

However, the photostream created by brookeshaden transcends the well-rendered clichés that are so abundant nowadays, and injects a power and majesty into the Flickr community that is genuinely breathtaking.

Years ago, I can remember standing in the Tate Gallery in England before Mallais’s masterpiece Ophelia. The painting is simultaneously lush, elegant and very off-putting. I remember feeling something like a mild electric shock standing before such a brilliant visual representation of emotional contraries.

Imagine my surprise when I casually came upon brookshaden’s photo stream, and felt the same kind of light-headed bliss. Her work is pure emotional gunpowder. With vast and dark psychological depths. She deeply in touch with the liminal spaces in which grief and rapture; love and death; bliss and melancholy comingle. Yet she does not adopt a gothic garishness which would feel like mere anachronistic sentimentality. Instead, she channels a reserve of power straight from the age of Shelley, Byron, and Keats, and adds a modern sharpness of focus which updates and magnifies her artistic inheritance.

Put simply, brookeshaden’s work is so unique and magnetic that feels like a primal force. It is “charged” material that carries its undeniable kinetic energy into the consciousness of her audience. She colors her world with alluring contraries, and draws us into the “little deaths” of her subjects (let’s not forget the sensual connotation of that term in the nineteenth century). It is a wonderful thing to have the pleasure of seeing this talented woman’s work before she receives the recognition that will surely bring her greater acclaim."
