Jimmy Buffet said it best: "Lookin' back on my background tryin' to figure out how I ever got here. Some things are still a mystery to me while others are much too clear."

I've been an avid, mostly amateur photographer since the early 1970's. While traveling around the world I went through a lot of Canon A-1 bodies and lenses. But it was only last year ( 2006 ) that I made the transition to digital. I bought a Canon Rebel XT and have since been learning how to use it, as well as basic Photoshop. I love the control digital gives me, which, lacking a darkroom, I never enjoyed before. I'm also converting the best of my surviving old photos and slides to digital as well, using an Epson Perfection 4490 scanner and countless hours using Photoshop clone tool to remove dust and scratches. Its going to be a long project getting caught up, so I'll be uploading batches of new work in between sets from past journeys.

My main interest is in journalistic photography, creating portraits of; people, events, places, and experiences. In everything, regardless of subject, my primary objective is the composition of the image.

I just made a leap and bought a Canon 24-70 2.8L lens, primarily for street photography and portraiture. Its a joy to use. I'm presently exploring shallow DoF and bokeh. Otherwise, for wildlife photography, I now have a new, 70-200 2.8L IS!

This October, 2010, I've retired my now venerable Rebel XT, and upgraded to an EOS 7D! I love my choice - its a great camera! But I now have even more to learn.

November 2011 update.. My EOS 7D and both L lenses were stolen this past month, so now I'm back to the old Rebel XT. Its tough going back to the old equipment, and the theft has dampened my enthusiasm, so I won't be posting many new photos for a while.

Here's an example of one of my favorites. I like the composition , it sums up therapeutic riding, and it reminds me of the illustrations of Maxfield Parrish or Norman Rockwell.
