Me? Well, I like to make pictures... lately, mostly of my kids. And landscapes. And seascapes, and flowerscapes, and very much cherry tree-scapes. I work part-time as a veterinarian. I'm trying to write a book. I'm a hiker of many trails. A completely voracious reader, when there are books to be read (there are always books to be read). A baker. I adore hoodies, earthtones, wild ocean shores, alpine meadows. I fall in love with cherry tree blossoms every spring. I love film. Always, and especially, film. I believe in magic. Not the wizard-type, but the moment-type. My heart has always been in the Pacific Northwest, even though I didn't always live here. I'm full of wanderlust. Quietly fierce. And not so well balanced. An adventurer. And a perpetual star-gazer.
My photography? I shoot film, mostly. The reasons are numerous: I'm in love with the depth that film offers, especially the medium formats. And the process... there's an element of nostalgic romanticism involved in shooting film. And the colors, the textures. The cameras themselves, of course. And so many, many more reasons.
My soulmate, in camera form, is a Hasselblad 500 C/M. I also flirt with a Nikon F100, an Innova 6x9 Pinhole and a Holga.
In terms of film, well... my favorites for color are Kodak Portra (both 160 and 400 speed) and Ektar 100. In terms of black and white, you can't go wrong with Kodak Tri-X and T-Max.
I have my film developed and (usually) scanned at Blue Moon Camera and Machine. They've always done an exceptional job, and I highly recommend them.

"Dani takes beautiful soulful images. Whether its a landscape, a portrait, a macro, or something not so easily classifiable, each one reflects back on a photographer who shoots with her eyes open to the wonder of the world around her."

Fuji and I says:
"Danielle's work is of the kind that quietly and unobtrusively gets under your skin and leaves you breathless and hungering for more...her Hasselblad is like a third eye that opens into worlds unknown and unseen, yet so close that you can step right into them; her magical pinhole images are excursions into the field of dreams.
And if you haven't been doing so, please do read her words under every image-Danielle's verbal skills are as marvellous as her image-making ones. Thank you for sharing, Danielle!

"There's not much that hasn't been said here about how wonderful Danielle's photography is, but I love her work so much that I felt the need to add my two cents. She has a very personal and intimate style, instantly recognizable from even the tiny image thumbnails, and her photographs never fail to communicate - we don't just see an image, we see her image, the moment as she saw and felt it. I'm often absolutely stunned by her ability to flawlessly compose a scene (seriously, Danielle, I would like to just follow you around for a day to get a sense of your process!). Danielle is truly making art rather than recording images and I'm so glad I found her on Flickr because she is such an inspiration!"

"Danielle, I am so glad that I somehow came across your fantastic work. There's no question that you are one of my favorite photographers...I'd so happily display so many of your lush green images on my walls! Thank you for being a constant source of inspiration, and one of the biggest reasons I'm dying to visit the Pacific Northwest. Seeing and clicking on a new upload from you is like opening a present...I'm always so excited to see what you have chosen to share!"

Holden Richards says:
"Danielle's photographs are otherworldly, otherworldly in the way that she shows you the "other" world we all inhabit. One that reminds us how beautiful and colourful it can be versus than the last time we bothered to notice how wonderful it all is. All of that comes with a generous dash of detailed, careful and well-thought words. Danielle is a great image maker."

"It is easy to enjoy Danielle's oft times romantic and always thought provoking take of this world we all share. There is a true sense of wonderment that I just enjoy. I suppose I am most happy to read her well crafted sentiments as they accompany many of her photographs. True storytellers can draw a person into their existence with such ease. Because of this, Danielle's world comes into complete focus and her written clarity is always so welcomed. I for one, treasure artists that can evoke passion and creativity into all of their work. Rare is the person that can weave written accounts in conjunction with their photographic expertise. Danielle does this.......and does it well. Thank you as always for being such an inspiration :)"

"Well, what is too be said with all the great testimonials already published. When I sign on to Flickr I find myself browsing my contacts photos and always looking for manyfires newly published work. Her elegance in her work and her corresponding poetry brings a sort of peace to my day. Makes me envious to see a world she see's through the lens and uplifted when she shares it with the world.

"I just love seeing a new picture from "manyfires" popping up in my contacts. Her creativity never ceases to amaze and amuse and please. The dream-like quality of her photos is something very special and always takes me to another, more beautiful place away from my mundane life.
And what the hell, I'll even admit to a small cyber-crush as long as you promise not to tell anyone else :) :P"

Sindri Svan says:
"I've been going through a bit of a photography depression so I haven't been shooting anything nor having the ambition to do so. My Holga lies unused collecting dust on the shelf and the digital is only pulled out when someone practically pulls me out of the house. Even so, the pictures sit on my hard drive waiting for a good time to be worked on...
As a result I've been out of Flickr for a while, haven't even renewed my account!
But the other day a friend of mine told me to upload and I did. And in the process I stumbled upon your photostream(once again) and lo and behold I am inspired!
Going trough your photostream and reading the captions for the pictures really make me want to get out there and shoot a pinhole for about 10 minutes, then waiting for a damn week for the negatives to show up! Or even just loading up my Holga with a color film and actually just taking it out with me instead having it sitting sadly in my shelf!
What I needed, I think.
What I needed was to see a drop of soulful images in a sea of emptiness."

"I am addicted to Danielle's stream. I don't always comment, but I always, *always* look. Her eye, unique and inventive, leaves us with captivating images and inspiration for us to do more, do better, and push our boundaries. Frequently you're left wondering just how the hell she *thought* of taking such a shot. And I think that's pretty magic. This photostream is amazing, creative, different, and exhibits a fabulous talent. Thank you for sharing with us all!"

Immortal Thrill-Seeker says:
"I met Danielle at my first ever Flickr meetup. She left an impression. Almost 2 years later, her photostream is still one of a handful I check out regularly to be inspired and amazed by. Like a great photographer, she strives to hone her craft and has an unrelenting commitment to it. Whether working with film, digital, Holga, or pinhole, she works magic with them all. I can't explain where Danielle's creativity comes from, but I think the truth lies somewhere in her unusually long toes. Now, I'm not saying Danielle's an alien, but I am saying that crop circles were seen in Iowa around the time of her conception : ) But whatever her parentage, she's an extremely talented photographer whose work I enjoy to no end. Cheers, Danielle!"

"ManyFires creates some of the most beautiful pinhole photographs I have ever encountered, and I look to her work for inspiration in my own photography. Her use of color, particularly with waterfalls and lushly green scenes, has influenced me to return to shooting at least some color with my medium and large format pinhole cameras. She captures a kind of hidden essence in a scene, revealed through the pinhole, with softness, brilliance, and depth of expression. I feel privileged to know her on flickr."

"Danielle never stops growing as an artist and it's so inspiring to watch. She's one of those people who put pieces of themselves into their work, making it unbearably beautiful and magnetic. Absolutely adore this stream, and her. xo."

"Danielle's stuff is awesome...her tales are amazing, and she's named a shot or two after Modest mouse lyrics...so that to is...amazing. If you need a reason to see why the pacific NW is a hot bed of incredible photographers....you need not look any more for a shining example."

"I have always admired people who think deeply, and love nature. Danielle puts these together in her creatively inspirational photographs. I feel elevated after seeing and reading her work and am left feeling better than I did before visiting her photo stream."

Jesse Estes says:
"I can always spot her photos in my contacts. Manyfires has a unique style, and it's very noticeable. She is also one of those flickr members that takes the time to tell you exactly what it is that she likes about your images... Beyond that, you can really feel the passion that she has for photography by just looking at the images she posts. I really like how she includes a piece of herself with each posting description. I give Manyfires the credit for inspiring me to also take the time to describe my images better."

"I don't personally know Danielle yet. I can tell you with confidence that she uses her heart to create photos as much, if not more then her camera or eyes. I feel that she has a very beautiful outlook on the world she sees. Thanks for sharing your visions with all of us."
March 25th, 2007
"Dani's one of those people you can't forget, for a multitude of reasons. Her brilliant eyes, her glowing hair, her mona lisa smiles, her conversation, her laugh, her intellect, her incredible imagination, and her photos. Her photos, in fact, seem to sum up all these wonderful features into one neat little bundle, showing a window to her soul and a glimpse of another world. She has an eye that is so unique and uncompromising, you can't help but stop and consider. We've known each other for awhile now, but every time I see a new photo, I see a new part of her. She's a fantastic friend, and I look forward to many more hikes with her, and more pictures of the world through her lens."

Zeb Andrews says:
"Danielle, you possess an amazing vision of the world around you, and an even better ability to translate that into remarkable photographs. You have the rare gift to be able to allow us, through the pictures you take, to grasp the meaning of what you saw. I have garnered much inspiration from your photostream, as I am sure have many others. Your photographs are fun and quirky, captivating and beautiful; they are, in other words, wonderful reflections of yourself. I count myself very fortunate to have gotten to know you as both a photographer and a friend. Thanks for sharing."
