Are you still getting the 404 error? Explore is working for me as well. Plus I've got a photo in Explore today and it is getting plenty of views, so I'm guessing whatever you saw was a temporary outage.

Linux and firefox and I've got 404 on explore, more worryingly I have changed to new flickr login and could not login. After one attempt failed the login page disappeared and I couldn't access it again. I've signed in by clicking on the create account button then the link "I've got a account". This took me to the Yahoo login process with the stored Yahoo emails. Bizarrely I could login with my yahoo email and old password.....

When on flickr, have you tried opening Explore in a new tab, using right click and open instead of left click. May not help, but it helps me with certain pages. But I'm not getting 404 errors either.

Another "me too" here: Explore is a 404 on Firefox under Fedora Linux.

Temporary workaround is to install the user agent switcher extension for firefox, and having it tell flickr that I'm using Windows.

In other words, there is some new code in flickr that consults the HTTP_USER_AGENT environment string and refuses, for no functionally valid reason, to render certain pages for Linux users.

Are you listening, flickr? Browser snooping is so 1999. Don't do it.

----

edit: .... or if you absolutely have to do it, at least make sure the fallback behavior (say, when the user agent ID isn't on your list of "common" ones) is to render some kind of standards-compliant page.

Rob Oo:
> Using a user-agent switcher fixes the issue.

Right, which confirms it's a flickr bug, not a browser issue. What flickr has done is likely something like this:

if user-agent is Internet Explorer or Edge
..... render the page this quirky way
else if user agent appears in this list of recognized identifiers
..... render the page this other way
else if user agent appears in this other list of recognized identifiers
..... render the page yet another way
end if

The problem being that they forgot to include a fallback else clause. Now any browser/OS combination not in their lists gets no content.

Even if it may behave different for some browsers, it's a server problem and should be solved right there and soon. Seemed to be ignored by the staff until now.

I guess there's a problem in the code sent by the page which calculates current date and time. When I use the option 'Desktop site', I get the 404 error page too on the Android-phone.

So one may use the group 'in explore' in the meantime: www.flickr.com/groups/inexplore/pool/

It does not seem to be an issue with caches, etc. Those have been cleaned ...

Windows with Chrome/Edge works fine, same does Android with Chrome.

I don't know about Chrome or Vivaldi, but I use Firefox and see Explore properly. You may want to try updating your Firefox to the latest version: Version 66.0.2

Macr1, thanks, I was starting to feel invisible here. Flickr's inattention to this issue is frankly the one thing standing between me and a pro account right now; I had been planning to upgrade because I'll be approaching my 1000 items before long, but their inattention to this issue is rather off-putting.

Yeah I know they have a lot of other technical stuff on their plate right now. It's just ... suboptimal ... that this help forum seems the only place provided to report bugs, and it's not (formally at least) monitored by any staff.

I echo this comment:

- that it's not just explore, but migrating to new accounts that is also a (more serious) problem.

The server bug is still not fixed. :-(

Obviously they sending some not working code (for iphone?), which should request the right page for "today" depending on where you currently are on this planet.

For chrome the solution is: go to: chrome.google.com/webstore/category/extensions

search for agent and install one of the agent switchers. The one from google will work. Switch e.g. to "firefox 33 for windows" and it will work, even if you pretend using a windows phone.

> Please direct staff to this topic.

I made the bug report on Monday. The automated reply said something about "if you have Pro, you are already in our VIP support queue!" -- which I couldn't help reading as, "your request has been placed in the bottom of a locked filing cabinet stuck in a disused lavatory with a sign on the door saying 'Beware of the Leopard.'”

Maybe it won't be that bad; anyway I can't fault them for prioritizing the paying customers.

Still, most of those reporting the same thing on this page are pro users. It might or might not speed things up if one of them also filed a report and included the permalink to my post about the presumed cause.
