[Official Thread] Ongoing improvements & updates to Free & Pro plans

Flickr Staff

Don-MacAskill says:

Hi all,

Today we announced important changes to Flickr’s Pro and Free accounts. I also posted an update on all of the wonderful improvements we’ve been hard at work building. I know this is a lot of change to take in, and we blogged about why we’ve made some of these important decisions. These updates allow us to focus on Flickr’s strengths as the world’s largest photographer-focused community where you can discover and connect with the best photography and photographers on the planet.

These changes are significant and important to the future of Flickr, so I’m here to discuss them and answer questions where I can. I believe it’s important that the community understands where we’re coming from and how hard we’re working to build amazing things for photographers using Flickr. I believe this is the right path forward to build a bright, exciting, sustainable future for Flickr and ensure the platform can continue to shape the world of photography for years to come.

SmugMug & Flickr

The Changes

New Simple Login!
Coming in January, there will be no need for a Yahoo account to use Flickr. Login is the number one complaint we receive through our Help Center, so we’re happy to free you to use any email you prefer to access Flickr.

Flickr Pro Accounts
Flickr Pro is better than ever. At less than half the cost of Apple, Amazon, or Google, it’s the best deal in photography — hands down. In addition to access to the world's largest photography-focused community, Pros receive these perks:

Unlimited Photos
All Pros may now upload as many full resolution photos as you can take. As always, photos can be up to 200 megabytes each, and videos can be up to 1 gigabyte.

Ad-Free Browsing.
Focus on what matters with a fully ad-free Flickr experience for you and your visitors.

Advanced Stats. See which of your photos are trending now, and which have performed the best over the life of your Flickr Pro account.

These are the new Pro-only features:

Premier Product Support.
Flickr Pros now receive priority assistance from our new world-class support team. You’ll go right to the front of the line when you need us at the Flickr Help Center.

More Partner Discounts.
We’ll be rolling out a suite of new discounts from our partners, including Creative Cloud from Adobe, 50% off a custom portfolio site on SmugMug, gear from Peak Design, and more. Be sure to check your Account Settings for all the perks available to you.Coming November

Advanced Stats on Mobile.
You’ll be able to track stats on your photos and your account for the first time from the Flickr apps. Coming November

Increased Exposure.
All Pro members as of January 1, 2019, are eligible for priority exposure in the next iteration of Explore. Coming early 2019.

New 5K Photo Display Option.
Your images will be beautifully optimized for any screen with display at resolutions up to 5K. Coming early 2019

10-Minute Videos.
Pros will be able to play back videos for up to 10 minutes, far more than the standard 3 that comes with free accounts.Coming early 2019

Learn more about Flickr Pro.

Flickr Free Accounts
Flickr Free members are essential to a vibrant, healthy Flickr. So we are determined to provide a free tier that allows anyone who is unable or unwilling to pay for Flickr Pro to meaningfully participate in, and contribute to, the Flickr community. Free accounts on Flickr are now for sharing and displaying your 1,000 best photos and videos.

If you fall in love with photography and Flickr, and want to store and share more photos, we ask you to upgrade to Flickr Pro, which gives you an unlimited number. To make this easier, now through the end of November we’re offering you 30% off your first year of Flickr Pro. This is without question the best deal in photography.

Free members with more than 1,000 photos and/or videos uploaded to Flickr have until Tuesday, January 8, 2019, to upgrade to Pro or download content over that limit. After January 8, 2019, members over the limit will no longer be able to upload new photos to Flickr. After February 5, 2019, Free accounts that contain over 1,000 photos and/or videos will have content actively deleted—starting from oldest to newest date uploaded—to meet the new limit.

Read more about the Flickr Free decision here.

Hello! I am happy that the video Service is (almost) up and working again! Videos that I uploaded during this downtime never finished the "progressing state", but I deleted those and uploaded those again..and it is working again...yay!

IMPROVEMENT idea: please make the stats more specific, I'd love to see the country of visitors..
also more specific stats of operating system/browser/android version etc... but at least the country, it is pretty basic information in other services.. ;)

Are you using Internet Explorer 11? This browser is no longer supported by Flickr. Many people who are using IE11 have reported what sounds like exactly like you are saying here. Staff have made an official comment about it here:

That person (and many others over time) have had comments removed from the Help Forum at times because they were abusive towards other members. I certainly am not going to bother tracking such things, but I've seen comments present, and then I've seen them gone, and I've seen many references to the same by other members. You can probably find such evidence trailing around in other threads, but I'm not going to waste any time searching for that now, either.

Not entirely true...many threads here prove otherwise ...Many times smug/flickr has let things run their course which sometimes is a wiser decision.Smug has also shown that just because a member calls for a thread to be closed and Smug considers it salvageable they will be tolerant. That is not a bad stance at all.Smug ifires a warning shot most of the time.

It is possible that Smug defines abuse differently than the old Flickr did..

After many years of using Flickr on it with no problem, I also cannot sign in to the 'new and improved' format using Safari or Chrome on my old iphone 5s. It insists on me using a newer browser (I'm at the latest versions supported on the phone for the iOS level I have).

What is so special about a login screen that can't be made backward-compatible for older browsers? It has worked fine for years.

I don't see this as progress (or a good return for my pro subscription...)

5 Months ago, Don-MacAskil quoted...

"The plan is to make *all* photos on Flickr available at up to 5K, including those uploaded 14 years ago. You can, of course, control what size your visitors see - but even then, you as the owner will be able to see super high-resolution versions."

I know, I know... it's *only* been 5 months since Don made that claim... but any little hint(s) as to the Team's progress towards this end?

I note that 10 minute videos have somewhat *secretly* been introduced - well if there has been fanfare I haven't noticed! - so I'm inwardly hopeful *somebody* is working away on this feature & it hasn't been quietly buried.

For now, still having to view big scan images with those clunky, crappy slider bars in Flickr is no fun. Gimme the 5K zoom spy-glass soon pliz!

Don-MacAskill,

First I have read the email about the change, probably later, and I didn’t delete my photostream from the account. However Flickr did it instead of me, so I didn’t see any of my photos. I have sent the request to download my photostream, but it is not help at all, because it’s empty already. That happens last year, and I have sent the request in January this year, and I have contacted to help forum too. Should I ask from the server how and how able to take back my photos?
I am looking forward to hearing from you.

Don,
I manage the NTSB's Flickr account and am enjoying the Pro features.
I'm required to submit quarterly stats on a variety of communication efforts, including the performance of our imagery posted to Flickr. Will Flickr offer a way to customize date selection for stats? I'd love to be able to run a report that says ### photos were added to the NTSB Flickr photostream during the quarter, earning a total of ##,### views, favorites, etc. during the quarter. I can get the data now, but it is a labor/time intensive effort.

thanks much,

Dennis.Wayne.Photography: Facebook is beginning to remove content about white supremacy and white nationalism. If that's what you consider "patriot conservatives", I think actual conservatives and actual patriots may take issue with your definition.

Real patriots embrace the differences in races and cultures that make up the United States, since welcoming people from all parts of the world is what this country was founded on.

Chris, you should look into using the Flickr API to write a script that can generate this information for you automatically. What you describe sounds like it should be well within the capabilities. I know that I have seen people use the API to summarize additions to group pools, such as which users have uploaded how many photos over the past year, and it seems logical that similar data should be accessible about your photostream.

Someone more experienced with the API may correct me if I'm wrong.

I'm guessing they have had their hands full with the elephant in the room that was the migration off Yahoo to Amazon servers..

Notwithstanding, I agree that a courtesy update on this much-looked-forward-to 5K resolution feature would also be very much appreciated by more than a few of us now, since the "Coming early 2019" part of Don's statement is clearly past it's use by date - without a word of explanation in passing...

Please?

For an "Official" thread (started by none other than the Head Honcho himself), this one seems to have suffered a rather pathetic demise over the last few months - it seems no-one cares less any more about this "Official" thread that just happens to list all the promised & "ongoing" improvements"?

I had imagined ALL "Official" threads such as this would be permanently sticky-ed to the Hot Topics section of the Help Forum - but apparently not. I had to trawl for this one to scavenge it up from the deep morass where it had sunk to..

So here's an idea - why don't staff implement a separate "OFFICIAL THREADS" section at the head of the Help Forum (under which they can affix all the existing "Official" threads) making it far easier for us all to refind the topics within?

Oh well, in the meantime, here's a *bump* for posterity..

Given that the promise of "Big, Beautiful New Sizes" was made by CEO Don McGaskill almost 9 months ago (on 31 October 2018 - see statement here - blog.flickr.net/en/2018/10/31/putting-your-best-photo-for...), and that Don states he himself was writing the software to achieve this aim, would Don or someone involved in that upgrade process like to comment on the progress thus far?

Surely a simple progress update on 5K image capability is not too much to ask for at this stage?

It worries me a bit that I can't see any update posts by Don himself (regarding Flickr improvements) in at least the last 6 months or so... :o( hopefully someone can allay my nervousness...?

Today I finally made decision, that I will pay for PRO. I have my own PHP gallery engine, that uses Flickr as photostorage over Flickr API. And + that there isn't really cheaper option for unlimited photos with such API interface. So I start logging in after a while. It took a while, before I get managed to log in. It directs me to Yahoo and then it stuck. Finally, after I have resetted my password I was able to log into Flickr account. I tried to pay money to You, and I wasn't able to do that. At first I tried to use my credit card. It seems, that only US citicens are welcome here (some Trump-mania here?), as credit card address can only be US-based. Another option was "Not US" and that leads to PayPal. Everything went smoothly until back to Flickr confirmation page, I got error "Store cannot bill to this address":

This happens 3 times in a row. 4th times, doing exactly same moves, I was able to see checkout button and complete my purchase. WHY every visit to Flickr must be such an agony!? My cuts say, that this is not better even for PRO.
