LIST of missing/broken features in Beta

Tatters ✾ PRO says:

something what we use(d) and love(d) in flickr - does not work now, or very poor implemented:
(Note, the list as we found a disadvantage, not by importance; importance is often subjective)

1. White text on black is very hard to eyes (means I cannot read 'the story', and I could not comment on photos anymore).
2. Navigation bar (pages) for groups, search result and other - gone last year - we have just endless loading, and it takes you back after you open a photo.
3. Admin invites - you know what I mean, lots of topics about it in HF,
--- Admin cannot see active invites.
--- Received invites to add photos to groups but they are nowhere to be found.
4. Notes - gone . They should be on the photo, and not hidden. Unable to add a new note.
5. Date photo taken - we cannot see more photos taken that day - no link anymore from photo page.
6. Date photo loaded - gone
7. Link to guest pass from photo page - gone.
8. TAGs - Autofill - gone, - Impossible to add string of tags; for example try tags flower "I love flickr" blue red . What have you got?
9. Click on TAG shows up all flickr photos with that tag - should bring your photos first, as it was before..
Machine tag searches are broken
10. Share by flickr mail works for one person only now (no multiple recipient address available anymore)
11. Formatting help - gone! (and my favourite Greasemonkey script does not work of course)
12. Links to groups, etc. are NOT highlighted in blue anymore, so they are not obvious.
13. Maps on photo page - missing (said they work hard to fix it, but Beta should not be compulsory then)
14. Photos in comment(s) are important - they are too small now and hidden. We asked before - leave the first comment on the top.
15. Entire comments/info area is overloaded and messy

ADDING more after your comments below (thank you)

16. link to the (high res) original, i.e.viewing different photo sizes when the owner has disabled downloading - gone- read more here in HF
17. Drop down menu that used to be available from the photographer's buddy icon on the photopage is missing.
as a result -
---Direct email for a private comment - gone... etc.
18. The link to the camera page has been removed - replaced with drop-down option on the right. - it means You cannot click on the camera name and go to view other pictures taken with the camera. - edit: FIXED
19. Seeing SETs when the photo has been added to 9 groups or more - gone
--- Seeing more that 9 groups in the list - gone too
20. Fave date - gone. It is impossible to see when someone faved a photo.
21 Tool navigation bar above the photo - gone.
22. Shift-Enter to add new line in comment? it is something 30 years back, like using Unix.
23. COLLECTIONS are buried forever.

March 28- ADDING more, following your comments below and other topics

24. Info: photo is public, friend or family? - no longer can tell - gone.
25. Replacing photo - icon - gone: more here
26. Videos html - gone - cannot download a video - more here
27. Round buddy icon change is an obscure, obnoxious change just for change's sake. Keep it square please.
28. Help link on the bottom of photo page - gone - more here
29. Flickr Slideshows Stopped Working on blog websites - it's betray - more here
30. Sharing to Tumblr is completely broke.

March 31- ADDING more, following your comments below and other topics

31. "Also in" tab - Non-Navigable Context . Strips for groups and sets used to be scrollable - gone , so it is impossible to see neighbouring photos in stream, set or group ; more here and here in HF
32. Buddy icon photos in replies - gone
33. Content type - gone - We used to see if the image was a "photo" or "illustration" or "screenshot". We cannot Set content type from photo page.
34. Flickr screen name on the top - gone - It's replaced by name from profile.
35. Stats - the direct link to stats from the photo page - gone,
36. Print photos option for family members - gone
37. Photo Title is Less Prominent now
38. Search Box on photo page - gone
39. Title on slideshow (the enlarged view) - gone
40. GALLERY - cannot add photo to a new gallery, and cannot see if it is already in a gallery
41. Sets are "Albums" now - another change just for change's sake.

More details you can find in 'wilcfry' blog - Flickr Changes, March 25, 2014 wilcfry.com/flickr-help/20140325/

Why so huge downgrade? Is there any hope these features come back?
To staff: Can you please give us a clear list of advantages with Beta? (I have not noticed it is Faster)

Tatters:):

this is a pretty depressing list of missing features-
I agree, most of them have been asked for over and over in HF and UserVoice; or where in the previous standard version.
Why even bother asking for feedback?
It is still Beta- only now we are stuck with it.

Another missing feature is the default size for sharing a picture. Now I have to manually select the size of the photo to "Original" one by one each time I want to share a certain photo instead of it sharing the size Flickr wants, as well as letting Flickr memorize the default sharing options (I always share my photos in a certain size and with bbcode for forums).

The entire menu that used to be available from the photographer's buddy icon on the photopage is missing.

Makes it very difficult to make a private comment about the image. Instead, for efficiency, I'm making negative comments about the photo for everyone to see when it has been wrongly submitted to a group.

You can always add

/groups
to the end of the photopage URL. That will give you a list of groups the photo is in.

The direct link to stats from the photo page has been removed.
You used to be able to click on the number of views to see stats for that particular photo.

The link to the camera page has been removed.
You used to be able to click on the camera name and go to view other pictures taken with the camera.

There is no Flickr tool bar on the photo page.
This makes navigating very annoying. Clicking the X rarely takes me to where I want to go. I have to open new windows or tabs.

Christopher A. Dominic PRO says:

Also gone: viewing different photo sizes when the owner has disabled downloading.

To the Flickr UX team: Even when a photo owner disables downloading, viewing different photo sizes remains a valid use case (for which the previous version accommodated). For example, one might wish to inspect details in that photo or judge photo quality.

(Workaround: add "/sizes/" to the photo url.)

Also gone: seeing sets when the photo has been added to 9 groups or more.

To the Flickr UX team: Sets are an important way for a photographer to point to similar or related works. Actually, it's the only way. Set visibility is therefore more important than group visibility. The previous version did this right by putting the sets on top and summarizing the groups. However, since groups are important too, it used to be possible to see the full and complete list with a single click.

(Workaround: add "/groups/" to the photo url)

Also gone: Fave date. It is impossible to see when someone faved a photo.

To the Flickr UX team: photo owners, but also photo viewers are very curious as to who the favers are and when they faved. It is also useful for deciding if the faves are unwanted, for example when there is a gap between faves followed by faves in rapid succession. In such cases, it is usually favers keeping porn collections. The previous version provided tools (fave date and a context link (!) to the faver's favorites).

(Workaround: add "/favorites/" to the photo url.)

I am not against change and I like the new photo page much better than the old one, but please, Flickr, don't destroy any features. Enhance them instead, so that people feel much more enjoyment when using this website. What's better than having happy users? (And for future reference, ask your users if you're not sure how to implement certain features over a redesign. In fact, send an e-mail to me personally, and I'd gladly answer.)

Not sure about pongo 2007 "tool bar on the photo page". - I think it is there - you have to click on square icon next to information icon (i) to see the navigation bars for groups and sets.
vidterry - thank you very much, I will work it out.

ηeliʘ: Yes if you go to a specific image and try and locate it in its spot in a group it looks to me like that is not now possible.
As a group admin adding tags to the images of others I am still trying to figure out how to add a string of single word tags. I can do it only if I put a quoted tag first in front of them. It appears all single word tags may have to be posted individually or posted in quotation marks.
Why have Flickr not given us some guidance with tagging given these changes.
Apart from the whole disfunctional sidebar I remain annoyed that a search of my tags does not bring up my own images first and also that groups are positioned above my own sets.

Tatters:):

eyetwist PRO says:

1. "Add to Groups" should be a top level option (like "share"), not in the drop down menu. The extra step complicates the participation in groups.

2. The "add to Groups" dialog pop-up window has the group icons WAY too big - thus someone who belongs to a lot of groups has a lot of scrolling to do. Since most groups don't have custom icons, the generic Flickr icons appear. This dialog window should simply be a text list of Group names for compactness and ease of use. Don't show the icons.

3. After clicking the "show all EXIF info" button, there does not appear to be any way to collapse the EXIF info to its former state. Needs fix.

4. As mentioned in other comments, on the right-hand column, need a way to see all the groups that a photo is in, rather than a truncated list. I would rather see a scrollable lost of all groups a photo is in. It is an inefficient use of space to show the sample photo thumbnails for each group beneath its name in the current list. Lose that. Needs to be able to show sets as well.

5. the photo title is lost amongst the other text in the right-hand column. Needs to stand out a bit more. Use a bolded or slightly larger font instead.

6. The new Camera Icons. Using a polaroid camera icon doesn't work to well for images that come from many other film cameras. Perhaps allow the user to select an icon when a correct icon can't be automatically selected? Ultimately the icon is a waste of space and contrary to the claimed purpose of the redesign - on-screen efficiency, Just change it back to the text camera name as in the previous version of the interface.

7. In the right-hand bar, the photostream thumbnail bar below the views and date has the thumbnails cropped too much vertically. Should show the thumbnail's native aspect ratio. If that can't happen, a less radical crop should be used, eg 2x3 or 4x5.

8. Clicking on the geotag location should either open a mini popup window showing the location on a map or simply link to a the full explore map page with nearby photos.

9. As noted elsewhere, the round profile icon change is an obnoxious change just for change's sake. Keep it square please.

The Searcher PRO says:

Marlis1: I think the idea for the new photo display is that it's no longer a "page" in the traditional sense, it's more of a detail "pop-up" of the photo you clicked on. Thus the "X" in the top right corner, traditional UI for closing a pop-up window, and absence of the navigation elements visible on the rest of the site.

Downside is it currently fails as a pop-up, as depending where you browse from (photostream, group, search, etc) the "X" to close it will take you to random and unexpected places.

One of the improvements that I can find is that the order of the comments has been reversed so that the newest is first. That is until you push the button to review the older ones (i.e. so that awards can be counted) and then it goes back and now you have to scroll down.
I know that there are scripts that do the counting for you but sometimes those are very inconvenient and slow.
Is there a way for you to keep the current reversed order of comments (newest on top) and when the additional comments button is pushed, keep the same order?
Another one....how about a drop down menu for the groups that a photo has been added to so that we dont have to guess as to which groups a photo has been added to?

Navigation has become too elaborate, everything made more complicated or simply missing. Flickr has become too self-absorbed (authistic would be the word, but I wouldn’t like to insult people with autism). Flickr has become anti community. Its eclectic soul has been sold to the devil.

But, alas.. Here are some of the missing or vague features of the BETA. I am sorry if I am repeating some..

Too big space for the photo, too small space for everything else. Remember - there are still people who will not upload huge resolutions. Too much black space, but we know this from the previous “experience”. To top the cream, we have white letters on black. It can cause vertigo if not disgust.

Pressing enter to comment and shift+enter for paragraphs is ridiculous.

Adding photo to groups: Group icons are too big, no need for that - a simple group list with small letters is enough. Also, most images in group buddy icons are gone.

Admin inviting:
If you have invited a photo to a group, you will not see that invitation anywhere. If you have changed your mind about inviting a photo or if you have invited it to a wrong group, you cannot undo it.

All unused admin invitations from the previous “exprience” are non-existant.

It is unknown to how many groups a photo belongs to. (info important for admins, again..)

Round buddy icons - the image in it is dislocated - I will have to create a new one to adjust it for a circle.

Links are underlined and there is too much extra space in the comments/ group codes. Ugly.

TAG autofill? Are we backshifting to the Middle Ages when books were hand copied and not printed?

Certainly there is more.

I have tried to figure this out, asked several times, no one has answered yet. Maybe it's no longer possible?

On the photopage, hover your mouse over the name of the person you want to reply to.

Click the rotating arrow next to their name.

18. The link to the camera page has been removed - replaced with drop-down option on the right. - it means You cannot click on the camera name and go to view other pictures taken with the camera.

This has now been repaired. I just checked.

However the black static Flickr tool bar across the top of the photo page is only visible if you are logged OUT.
I switched off all my scripts to see if it was one of those interfering, and it still does not appear. Maybe a bug? I tested this on Win Vista and Win 7, both running FireFox 28.0

"There is no longer a way to see if others' photos are public or private."

Oh, that's interesting.

I'm not entirely sure that I have a reason to know this, but is indeed a missing feature.

EDIT: Just thought of a reason: I want to post a link to it for others to see. I had no idea I was seeing it because I'm friends/family instead of it being public.

There are more reasons: In family/friends-only pics, users may discuss private matters. When there is no indication, one might assume that a photo is friends/family only and horrible things could happen.

Also, clearly displaying that it's not a public photo also changes the viewer's behavior. For example, they might not share reluctantly share direct photo URLs.

That's a good point too. I often have discussions with friends/family under my non-public photos that I wouldn't have under a public photo.

(Sorry, I meant "to the right of the photo", not "under the photo".) :-)

The Searcher PRO says:

oscarpetefan: He's saying use a cheat, by adding "/groups" to the end of the URL page address for the photo you're looking at. For example:

www.flickr.com/photos/oscarpetefan/12832065594/groups

However it's not a fix, it's a hack, as Flickr no longer makes this page visible or possible to navigate to. And it's worse than you describe, because those nine slots on the photo page are for both groups AND sets. And groups come first, so if an image is in more than nine groups, then sets are completely invisible.

Yes this new photo layout format Sucks, again Flickr has made changes for the worse. They always make their own format and layout changes and its never for the better.

Administration seems to ignore its customer base when the negative feedback comes in for changes to keep the existing layout format when 90% of its clients are satisfied with.

At least before we had the option to change it back to the original layout that works and that I am very satisfied with.

Also, besides all the other negative issues, I find it very difficult & complicated to map a photo now!

Very Disappointed Again,
James

That said:

BB Code no longer includes the photo title, just a copy of the photo that's a clickable link.

HTML appears to work properly, it still gives both the photo and the title.

Depressing to read all these missing things. This is a huge fail.

Also, because size of photo and download photo are connected, you can no longer see a person's photo at a larger size if they have disabled downloading. I don't care about downloading someone else's photos, but I do like to look at the details of some photos in the large size. Maybe not that big a deal to some, but it is nice to enjoy photos by looking at them full size.

It is also not possible to flickrmail someone directly from their buddy icon, the buddy name should take precedent or at least show over actual name (that's why you are asked to create a buddy name, right?), invitations to groups does not show - have to go to recent activity to respond to invitations, cannot navigate to your own photostream directly from your contacts screen .... just in addition to the list above.

possibly another malfunction or bad design:
The pull down triangle on the right side of the comment box:
It doesn't DO anything- it is right at the edge of the slider- to pull out is not an option, and down is not active. This triangle serves no purpose whatsoever.
it is really awkward to write a longer comment in this cramped space,
Staff should maybe try out things before a release?

when I click anywhere INSIDE the comment box the box extends a few lines worth. Clicking or hovering over the triangle is not moving anything in either direction.

i turned mine all off when I switched to beta to be on the safe side.most of the good ones were broken anyway.
the one i miss most is the group list filter.
for me Flickr always needed scripts since i arrived in 2008.
probably because we all use the site in vastly different ways.
a least one good thing now the NPE has been rolled out is that the smart folk are working on them again.
i was worried by a few comments that said they would be unable to implement them..

Over on the "user voice" forum, it looks like most of the "hot topic" threads are general rants from users upset about having the beta expanded to all English users. But there are some specific user requests that should surprise no one who's been listening to feedback during the more limited beta test.

Top-voted specific request rather than general rant: Put the comments under the photo so there's enough room for text and larger photos.

yahoo.uservoice.com/forums/230787-flickr-photo-page-beta/...

Second-highest voted specific request: black text on a white background.

yahoo.uservoice.com/forums/230787-flickr-photo-page-beta/...

Third-highest specific request: "RETURN" means a new paragraph, not post an incomplete comment.

yahoo.uservoice.com/forums/230787-flickr-photo-page-beta/...

Interesting, is it not, that the top specific feature requests are all about text? It's as if users want to use flickr interactively, as a social experience, where they can communicate about their photos...

joshua_putnam: The beta test hasn't been expanded to all English uses. The beta is over, this is the actual page now. While I agree about the first two, the "return" issue seems pretty small once people understand how it works. "shift-return" still allows as many line breaks and paragraphs as people want to write, and ergonomically, being able to complete a comment without lifting the hand to the mouse to click a button is cleaner and faster.

You have posted a lot about this, and it is abundantly clear that *to you* it is a negligible inconvenience.
I don't understand why you cannot accept that many other people loathe it.

I know perfectly well how it works, but detest this way of having to format text in comments or elsewhere.

You have posted many times that it is a common thing. I beg to differ. The only time I personally have to shift-enter for a paragraph break is on Skype (I don't use Facebook, where I understand it is also used) - and I hate it.

Contrary to your apparent opinion that it is becoming more prevalent, I would argue that it is very old-fashioned, counter-intuitive and a royal pain in the arse.
