They are supposed to break when you hover the mouse over them.

Go to a photo page and click on the snowflakes above the Yahoo logo.

I didn't notice them until after I posted. Cute. But I wish the devs would devote some of that energy to fixing the stuff that's broken or glitchy around here.

Well anyhow, mine are busted too and as for snow....???

Found the real lights! And it's snowing pink as well LOL!

Schill says:

For the record, I actually recorded those glass breaking sound effects myself on tape, roughly 20 years ago (and yes, they're real glass bulbs being dropped and broken.) They've proven to be handy for this little seasonal easter egg. :)

The pink snow script was originally added to Flickr a few years ago (as some of you recall), and the Christmas lights are based on a script I wrote several years back.

A note on behaviour: Once you do break all the lights, they should disappear and "respawn" after a random delay. Once the snow has started, you can click the [x] near the Flickr logo to bring the page back to its normal, less-snow-and-light-y state.

Happy holidays!

It's a long shot, but can you try signing out of Flickr, then signing back in again?

I'm doing some checking. I'll be right back.....

EDIT: Just checked in three accounts and in five browsers (IE, Firefox, Safari, Chrome and Opera.) All work well for me.

@ cqstrd

In the upper left corner of a photo page, do you see the purple "Yahoo!" logo?

If yes, are there any pink "dots" above the purple logo?

If yes, click on any of them.

cqstrd says:

thank you very much for trying!

yup, i can see the logo, but there are neither dots nor snowflakes above it...

Pixel Wrangler says:

There is a slight delay, BTW, before the "dots" appear. Maybe a second to a second and a half after the photo-page opens.

[Edit] I removed a reference to Santa as it may have been unintentionally insensitive :(

Hopefully tech support can look at your photostream and figure out a fix!

Interesting. It's so rare than anyone types anything insensitive in a forum online. ;-)

Now I'm curious as to how a Santa reference could be insensitive.

(Did you say he was fictional? Now that could break some hearts...)

I don't see why anyone should feel excluded from Christmas festivities. What started as a pagan mid winter festival and was adopted by Christianity, is now a global excuse for a holiday.

Schill says:

cqstrd: The snowflakes aren't on all pages, but may be seen in some popular places (i.e., on your photostream, or the photo page.)

Older browsers like Internet Explorer 7, or IE 8 in "compatibility view" (which you may be using?) will not get the snow effect at all.

You don't need compatibility view on for Flickr, so if you think you have IE 8 and compatibility view on, see here for a screenshot of what it looks like (the "broken page" icon) and then you can try turning it off.

i shut the whole thing down last night ...when i turned it on this morning, the snowflakes did show up on safari but they were not on IE (8)...so, i tried your compatibility suggestion and - ...what to my wondering eyes should appear, but little pink snowflakes and lights very clear...

not sure why they didn't show up on safari last night - maybe my laptop just needed a good night's sleep...thanks to you and hairlover for all your help

p.s even tho' i'm not a gun guy, i still think the light bulb shooting gallery is awesome!

They're saying on the net if you break a magic number of those lights, the snowflakes turn, well a snowy color and the Flickr account gets PRO status if its free, or an extension of 3 months if it's already PRO. Don't know where these rumors start.

@Schill — one of the things I loved about the snow was the ability to (slightly) change the direction of the snow fall (from East to West) via the mouse. Such subtlety ;) Thank you for making the Flickr holidays brighter!
