How do you resize photos for sharing

blumacheese says:

There used to be a place where you could resize photos when you wanted to share them. I can't find it anymore.

Flickr has always resized your images as soon as you upload them, creating a thumbnail, square thumbnail, small, medium, and large (if necessary).

There's never been "a place where you resize them."

When you use the "Share This" menu and send a message to someone, it links them back to the photopage, which displays the "new medium" size (640 pixels).

you can use the desktop uploadr tool to resize the largest version of your photo that will be uploaded to flickr. it's helpful for free accounts that don't have access to original high-resolution files. may as well resize to 640 pixels long so as not to unnecessarily waste bandwidth.

I want to download an avatar sized photo somewhere so I went to
share this - grab a link- would not download

so I thought i needed to make it smaller so I went to actions- all I saw was view sizes- square but i do not see how to change to square ( or any other size) . I thought there used to be a way of actually changing the size. I am not sure where the desktop tool is.

"I am not sure where the desktop tool is."

sgoralnick is referring to the Flickr uploader tool (flickr.com/tools/) which resizes your original before uploading to Flickr. It doesn't have anything to do with the various sizes you see on Flickr.

"I want to download an avatar sized photo somewhere so I went to

If you wanted to download something, go to the all sizes page, choose your size, and click "download."

The "share this" is mostly about sharing with others.

Thanks for your help- It still did not help with what I needed though.

( I am probably doing something wrong - it worked the last time I needed to share a photo)

What is it exactly you want to do? Your first message said "resize," your second "download," and your third "share." Those are three entirely different actions.

If you explain what it is you're really trying to do, it would be easier to help you.

Sorry, I must be misunderstanding.

As andyscamera says, you're talking about three different things here.

If you want to download an image:

1) Go to the photopage
2) Click Actions
3) Click View all Sizes
4) Choose your size
5) Click download

If you want to show an image to someone else ("share"):

1) Go to the photopage
2) Copy the URL from the browser's address bar
3) Paste the URL into an emil
4) Send the email to someone.

lol

I am trying to put an avatar on a website - I had one from here and all I did was click grab the link and it worked.

Now I am trying to change it. I did the same and it did not work.

So I thought it was too large to be used as an avatar so I changed it to square and uploaded it again. still does not work.

I am not sure what i am doing wrong this time.

it works for e-mail I sent myself an e-mail and can put it on my blog- It just does not work for using it as an avatar..

Okay, that's something different altogether.

From Flickr's Community Guidelines:

"Don’t use your account to host web graphics like logos and banners. Your account will be terminated if we find you using it to host graphic elements of web page designs, icons, smilies, buddy icons, forum avatars, badges, and other non-photographic elements on external web sites."

Wil is right if you're hosting the image here and just posting a link on the other site.

If you want to download the little square image from here and upload it to the other site, follow his instructions for downloading here, and then you'll need to upload it to the other site.
