[Closed] [Official Topic] New Profile Page

Flickr Staff

Kevin PRO says:

Hello folks-

As there are no further change plans to layout of the profile page, we are going to close this topic at this time. Our updates to this topic are below. Thank you!

Previous Staff Updates -

4 January 2010- We do not plan further changes to the profile page, since the previous update about this. With regards to how groups are displayed, we still are looking at ways to organize this differently, but do not have a specific time frame to do this.

12/02/09 - The interests recovery tool is fixed and most people should be able to see their interests again. We also have this posted to the FAQ here.

However, because of a technical error in recovering the data, interests for a few accounts wasn't recoverable. Even though this information is no longer going to be used on Flickr we understand that the time you took to fill it out and the information there is important to you and apologize for the error.

We'll be messaging people for whom it isn't available to let them know what's happening.

11/23/09 - once we resolve the issues the Interests Recovery Tool is having, we will be posting a link to it in the FAQ.

11/14/09 - we are aware that the interests tool to retrieve your interests is not working for all users at this time, and will provide an update when we know more.

11/12/09 - If you entered any interests into your profile prior to the change, you can retrieve them at the following link (otherwise, that page will contain blank fields). I want to stress that this page is not linked from anywhere on the site except for this thread and that at some point we will be removing the page.
www.flickr.com/account/interests/

Update: 11/02/09 - a fix was deployed for fuzzed out 'photos of' user appearing in profile when viewing with Safe Search off.

Update: 10/26/09 -- "I’m pulling on my asbestos underwear to bring you an update regarding the new member profile..." -- Heather
* "In my own words..." will be scrubbed from your member profiles.
* We're working on a tool/page/utility that will give your "interests" information back to you.
* We're looking into how groups are ordered and we're going to turn a few knobs and levers as it's a little clunky. Stay tuned.
* For now, "Photos of you", “Your favorite photos from other Flickr members" and your "Testimonials" will remain as they are.

10/23/09 --" Fixes have gone in for testimonial display in Internet Explorer, group number issues, various add testimonial links where you shouldn't see them." -- Kevin

Known issue: Adding shortcode (link to a photopage enclosed by square brackets) to your profile will change font size for text you added underneath.

Information that was in profiles previously (interests, etc.) is not lost, we'll get that information back to you. Staff statement on that

Ok, first off, there are some positives.

The layout for contacts is an improvement. That may be about it.

Hiding the testimonials at the bottom of the page looks and feels inefficient, poorly thought out and just plain dumb-looking.

The text "In my own words" is painfully bad. I didn't put it there, and I don't want it on my profile page.

The large "Manage your profile" box at the upper right seems like a complete waste of real estate.

But I suppose that, in the best tradition of Flickr, any protests from the users will go unheeded. Sigh.

I think it's by creation date of the group (oldest first)

or maybe not. might be by date you joined the group? although, it doesn't seem to be that exactly either.

There needs to be an option to hide those thumbnails of recent favorites on the profile page. When I give something a favorite, it's to acknowledge a great image... but that doesn't mean I want it showing up on my profile page.

Wow. Wow. I loathe it. And I'm not one of those knee-jerk complain about everything new on Flickr people...

It's not how it looks so much as what's missing. Why are our interests gone? I just spent quite a while the other day updating mine, and was looking forward to searching other people with what I'd added. WHY are testimonials practically hidden? I admit I kind of thought I'd have more of them by now, but I'm proud of the ones I do have and wish they weren't at the bottom.

I looked at it while signed out and was disappointed to see it STILL only shows 50 groups (the most recently joined--could we at least have the option to show the ones we're most active in or something?).

The favorites added to the profile is an interesting feature, but are we able to opt out of it? Oh, and "In my own words..."--WHY?

Reposted from the People in Photos feedback thread.

I'm not so keen on 'In my own words...' .

Also could there be a problem with incorrectly filtered favourites appearing in a profile page? As it was before reading a profile might have been a good rough guide as to whether a photostream could contain potentially NSFW content. Now, if someone has unknowingly faved an image that has been incorrectly filtered and therefore falls outside your SafeSearch, you won't have a choice in whether you see it or not.

I complain about all new features and then go on to ignore them. I don't like my favorites showing on my profile page (and actually un-favorited a few so they don't show there), but since I never look at my profile page (and rarely look at anyone else's), I'm sure I'll be ignoring this new feature in no time.

I do not have a problem with any of the layout changes - everything needed is accessible in the right corner:

Manage your profile

* • Edit your profile information
* • Edit your profile privacy
* • Edit your buddy icon
* • Edit your screen name
* • Hide your profile from searches
* • Write and review testimonials

chose your favorites carefully - it will tell about you and your taste just as much as your words. :)

All of what you have done was a waste of money and not needed. While ignoring corrections that have been requested for years.

There is nothing I like about the changes. But especially dislike adding my contacts comments next to my contact new uploads. Also do not like testimonials at bottom of page or my favorites on profile page. You have made it to complex. It seems you are taking cues from Microsoft.

What is needed is a color code way to see if a picture is flagged correctly without opening Flag your photo. You people cancel accounts for mis-flagging and this would be great help. Also, you need a way to keep safe flagged pictures being added to Adult moderate and restricted groups.

I don't like the "In my own words..." text. It's pointless.

And putting the testimonials back on the right would be nice, right now it's just an empty white space and it's weird how people have to scroll through contacts, faves and groups before they see the testimonials. The Joined, Hometown,... text could use some better placement or a frame or something, it's just hovering there randomly and naked.

Other than that it looks good, but I'd really like to see the 2 things above change.

Oh and were real names always the same fontsize as the username (top of the profile "About...") ?

1) My Testimonials on my laptop while running IE looks like this

Another disaster

2) When clicking to expand the group list, the same button should be used to shrink it. Otherwise you have to pan all the way to the bottom and click on another link. The opening and closing of this list should be toggled in one place, or at the least both places.

3) When clicking on Contacts & Faves it should open a new tab or new window and not move away from the profile page.

The testimonials move is really badly thought out, I don't want my contacts of favourties displayed in this horrible new way and the old group listing was much better and user friendly.

That bloke says:

I think mostly it's an improvement, these are my suggestions for refinement:

1. 'In my own words' is cheesy, clumsy, Microsoft-ish wording that just doesn't work. Also, it's redundant - whose words would you expect them to be? If it were up to me I'd lose it and let everything shift up a little.

2. How come the profile description OK, OK - 'my words' text lacks line spacing when all the other text has it? It looks cramped in comparison to everything else. Alter the text to have line spacing.

3. The testimonials feel too, well, big. Remove the line spacing here (copying the current formatting of the 'in my words' text) to reduce the amount of space they use up and have them look more balanced - IMO.

Cynthia E. Wood says:

Wow. I was surprised to visit my own profile page and to find that it had been completely re-arranged -- and that a huge portion of the content had completely disappeared. Excuse me, but WTF, Flickr...??

We were given no warning, as far as I know, that these changes were coming down the pike. And, more importantly, we've been given no CHOICE in the matter.

It's one thing if you want to re-arrange page layouts or whatever (even if I might not like it or agree with the changes), but it's quite another to DELETE A [PAYING] CUSTOMER'S CONTENT from his/her profile page. Sorry, but that's just wrong.

As for the layout changes, I very much preferred having testimonials off to the side. I also very much preferred having my contact information buried at the bottom of my profile page; it's not a piece of information I want[ed] to have featured front & center here on Flickr, which is open/public to the whole freaking world. So thanks a lot for "exposing" me in a way that I do not wish to be exposed. (Not to mention that the whole right side of the profile page just looks lame and misaligned now...)

Also, what makes Flickr think I want to "feature" the work of others by featuring thumbnails of my favorites on my own profile page? I'm a working photographer struggling to make a living at this business; I'm not exactly keen about featuring others' work on my profile page! Is Flickr advertising other photo-sharing sites on Flickr...? Would you ever think that's a good idea for your "business plan"...? I am all for being supportive of my fellow photographers, and for giving praise where I think praise is due, but please, let me make my own [self-]promotional decisions! And please do not subvert my efforts to promote myself and my own work!

Why did you do away with the "Groups" tab and put groups on our profile pages instead...? I don't really care much about groups, so once again it's not something I feel I want to feature on a PAGE ABOUT ME. (Not to mention that I'm not seeing any of the former options we had to sort/organize groups...it's just one long, unwieldy, non-alphabetized list now. Not very helpful!)

What on earth were you guys [not] thinking...?

Did I mention I am a paying customer? I am a paying customer. In fact, I have two "pro" accounts.

It appears that correctly filtered images will only appear in the fave list to those who wish to see them. Thus Moderate images are only seen my people who have there filters set to that level or higher, and restricted images are only available to those who have Safe Search Off.

Yes, poorly flagged images will show through. I added an image as a fave that should have been moderate but was set to safe. I logged out and logged in as another user. I saw the missflagged image in my faves.

These means the filter system is working as it should, and it is even more imperative now that filters be checked regularly by users who go beyond the duck and bunny crowd.

BlueRidgeKitties PRO says:

I hardly ever visit my profile page but I do use it occasionally to see what other people are up to when I get favorites/contact adds from people I don't know. So thinking about its usefulness for showing others who you are and what you're interested in, it seems to take a few steps back. The loss of info what people actually are interested in is one of those things.

It would be nice to have the option to check or uncheck on the edit profile page whether favorites are displayed or not. In addition, it would be really nice to have the same option for your own most interesting/popular pictures. To me it would make most sense to showcase the member's own pictures on the member's profile page, though I certainly also find it interesting which ones they fav. So I don't mind that being on there, but it would be better if it was opt-in/opt-out.

Grammatical nitpicking: The headings "In my own words..." and "Your favorite photos from other Flickr members" are inconsistent. To make that consistent, it should probably say "My favorite photos from other Flickr members."

It would be nice to have the option to change the "In my own words..." heading along with your profile description when editing your profile. Or make it consistent on the editing page too, so people know that they are writing something "in their own words" in that box. I was able to get it off by deleting my profile description completely. That's nice, but I might still want to put something about my interests and what my photostream is about up there without that heading.

I can't figure out how the groups are sorted. On my page it isn't by most recent activity, nor any other pattern I can detect. I tried to see if it was random, but reloading the page doesn't change it either. It would be nice to have options to pick and choose how they are sorted. For me, the most useful sorting option would be to have them displayed by which group I last added a picture or discussion comment to.

* Shows me the "Write a Testimonial for..." link even if I've already written one for that person
* Groups photo count reads "1 photos" instead of "1 photo" - this is one of those things I'd list on my Pet Hates blog if I had one.
* Agree that "In my own words" sounds a bit weird
* Generally agree that would be nice to get Testimonials beginning above the fold, but... IT'S JUST THAT IT'S CHANGED AND I HAD NO IDEA IT WAS COMING.

I really do dislike how Flickr from Yahoo can make such great changes, yet refuse to change an incredibly small thing that is actually very important to Flickr users.

I don't like it one bit. When I first looked at it I kinda started laughing in a watching-a-B-movie-horror-flickr kinda way. To me, it's devolution [sorry]. Looks like cutlery left unwashed in the sink.

I know I'll ignore it or get to used to it -- so, in the end, not much of a big deal I reckon.

"Testimonials on my laptop while running IE looks like"

Yep, someone caught that as well. It's in the bug hopper.

George- ok! Testimonials bit sounds like what SF Lights saw as well, you can see that in non contacts pages as well. Also, the 1 Photos/Photo bit, gotcha. :)

re: all: Feedback (happy and not so), suggestions, grammar, thanks everyone!

Jakerome: "Does new testimonial notification show up now?"

No, it doesn't. Much of the work is done, but the last bits, yes, after this long, still aren't there yet.

"Given that my e-mail address is hidden from the public (but visible to me) it is rather weird that I can click on it and send myself an e-mail."

We actually displayed that to you in your own profile before.

yeah, but it was waaaaaaaaaay at the bottom. now it's all the way at the top, giving it much more importance. i dunno, it's just weird that it's there even if it's supposed to be hidden. was probably weird that it was there before, too.

Ha, I like how the "In my own words..." is actually a quote by a fictional character on my profile! There's no reason for your OWN profile to have "In my own words..." please get rid of it.

Also why are my Favorites on my profile? They're other people's photos, not mine.

Shouldn't at least the groups I administer be on my profile instead of some random sampling?

And what's with the Testimonials being moved down to the bottom of the page, plus there's some weird formatting since their buddy icons are overlaying their names.

I just made my email visible to "Nobody" because it was the Yahoo address I never used anyway, and my attempts to put in my real email address never worked. If anyone wants to write me they can just use Flickrmail...

Um, not sure why someone is taking time here to leave comments proclaiming their indifference...

I agree with the suggestion that you have the option to highlight your OWN photos on your profile, not favorites! I'd been using the badge from BigHugeLabs to do that, but that hasn't loaded on my page for MONTHS as far as I know (while signed in or out), and I just deleted it. So now only other people's photos are showing...

Burnt Umber - my point wasn't about correct filtering, it was about incorrectly filtered faved images showing up in the profile page. It should always be as you describe in your first paragraph on the favourites page providing images have been filtered correctly. The same applies to the profile page.

My point was that the profile page may no longer be safe to view in a work situation (for example) if that profile contains incorrectly filtered favourites. As it was before you could be fairly certain that profiles would be safe to view regardless of the content of favourites and could serve as some sort of guide as to the type of content you might expect in the photoostream.

I think this could have an impact on the sort of images people chose to add as favourites in the future. I think favourites on the profile page is not a good idea.

My preference would be for a more modular approach where one could select what elements one wanted to appear on the profile page but I can't see that happening any time soon.

Lastly, and I know I've mentioned it before, there's really no need for "In my own words...", it serves no purpose and sticks out like a sore thumb. You wouldn't expect to see "In my own pictures..." above the photostream.

It's getting really frustrating seeing so many longstanding problems with Flickr get ignored in the pursuit of new features.

Can't you guys pull an Apple/Snow Leopard and just put a whole development cycle on fixing the things that have been broken since before I joined? Apple proved a mostly-bugfix release wasn't going to make the sky fall - you can follow them now.

PS. Am I the only one who is going to be on the lookout for new features the next time Flickr goes down or gets a bad case of the hiccups? Deploying new features seem to break the site.

In my own words:

elementalPaul I like having my faves there, and I like one stop shopping, going to a profile and seeing what they are about. I was always annoyed and having to read a profile and then go check out their faves.

Yes, missflagged faved images are going to get people in trouble, even worse than before. As part of this redesign work there should have been implemented a fast and easy way to check Safety Filters on an image before you add it as a fave. The Moderate and Restricted users have been asking for this for a long time.

I for one just don't Fave adult content for just that reason. I never know if it filtered properly and I am not going to check every freakin image I fave by toggling Safe Search settings.

I digress. It is what it is, and some accounts are going to get sanctioned as a result. i think this is a good thing.

Well..."indifference" is still feedback, although I would call it "acceptance of the inevitable." I've had a rocky relationship with most of the changes flickr has rolled out but have learned to accept and move on.

Aside from reporting bugs, it is now what it is, like it or not. I may have preferred things not change thus, but I have to ask myself this question: "Is this going to seriously change the way I use flickr?"

Thus far: No.

When I open my profile using IE at the testimonial looks like the testimonial author's name crashed against they buddy icons in a weird accident. At Firefox works fine.
Love the clean design you did. Love to see my favs there too. They do deserve to be visited and seen for sure.
Except for the "in my own words" I would give 10 for the new profile page.
